Chapter 3 The Making of the Device
Qiao Xianyong sat on the haystack, watching his father, Boss Qiao, pulling the bellows hard.
He asked curiously, "Dad, when you made a blacksmith, you didn't seem to have been pulling the bellows for so long as you are now."
Boss Qiao was very pleased that his young son could see the difference in his work. Qiao walked in, looked at his husband and son lovingly, took out a piece of linen and wiped the sweat on his chin, and said, "The Zhang family next door is going to my parents' home in Qi Village. My mother didn't ask someone to tell me before, and made hundreds of clothes and tiger-toed shoes for the boy who was about to be born. I wanted to pick it up with the Zhang family, and I also wanted to stay at my parents' home for a few days. When the boy was born, he didn't have that time to go back to my parents' home."
Boss Qiao knew that his wife wanted to go back to her parents' home to show off a big business he had just received. He kept working and said loudly, "Take a dozen fresh eggs back. You go back to your parents' home at any time. The villagers who don't know thought I'd give you a break."
Boss Qiao seemed to be amused by his words. He laughed loudly and said, "Don't worry, come back, you and Yong'er can go back."
Qiao Xianyong listened in a daze. When he heard this, his chest shook and said loudly, "I won't go to my mother-in-law's house. I want to watch my father do my work at home!"
At night, when it was the most important time for weapon forging, Qiao Boss predicted that the fire temperature had reached a sufficient height. The man in gray gave him two ore raw materials, one was the easy-to-identify iron ore. In his opinion, it was the top iron ore. According to the man in gray, this was brought by Hu Shang from a very long and hot country. It was extremely rare, but the man in gray didn't seem to take this ore seriously. Another ore raw material, Qiao Boss had never seen this ore. This kind of ore raw material was only given to him.
He was bigger than the adult fist, but very heavy, heavier than all the ore he had seen. The ore was also very unique in color, black and completely impermeable. Some emitted light blue light at night, and some looked like black and red at night. The man in gray took great care and handed the ore to him. It was also possible that it was Boss Qiao's illusion that after the man in gray handed him the ore, he seemed to be shorter, but maybe it was because the iron was struck for too long and there was something wrong with his eyes.
Qiao Xianyong held on and couldn't fall asleep, sitting next to him blinking his eyes at his father. He also knew that it was the most important moment.
Boss Qiao first put the precious ore carefully into the crucible in the fire. The bellows and skins below were whistling. The flames suddenly rushed up and swallowed the crucible. Boss Qiao waited patiently for the ore to soften.
A few hours passed, and Mr. Qiao was covered in sweat. Yong'er was already asleep next to her.
The ore did not react.
Boss Qiao had never encountered such a situation. He added a little molten greystone, and the flames rose a little higher, but the ore was still lying quietly in the crucible without any signs of being heated.
Boss Qiao was a little anxious, and there were less than two days left before the agreed date of the man in gray.
He pulled the bellows hard, trying to heat them up a little more.
Nothing has changed.
The sun rose and the rooster crowed. Yong'er woke up. He opened his eyes and looked at his anxious father blankly. He went to make a bowl of water sensible, brought it to Boss Qiao, endured the hot heat, and tried to raise it up and said, "Dad, drink water."
Boss Qiao hasn't been sleeping for two days and his eyes have not been closed. His body is gradually losing control. He did not hear his son's voice. His right arm waved down, and the thick porcelain bowl that Yong'er was holding was knocked away from his little hand to the furnace. The bowl instantly shattered, and a large piece of porcelain rebounded back and bounced on Yong'er's right side face, cutting a deep bloody hole. Dark red blood popped out of Yong'er's face, some fell to the ground, some left along his neck on his sweatshirt, and some blood flew into the crucible with ore.
Boss Qiao didn't look at Yong'er, and all his attention was focused on the crucible. Suddenly, he saw a few drops of dark red unknown liquid flying into it. He was very angry and frightened, afraid that the liquid would affect the purity of the ore. He was trying to take it out and reprocess the ore and then smelter it, but the delivery time must be too late, so he could only explain to the man in gray. Just as he was thinking, the crucible made a strange sound. He saw the flame rising and instantly rushed to four or five meters high, and colorful bright colors burst out from it. It seemed that there was a shadow of something. It was not a human figure or an animal that could be recognized. The shadow was restless in the irritable flame.
Boss Qiao was shocked. Even Yong'er was stunned and forgot the pain on her face.
Boss Qiao heard a loud noise, as if something was blown into the sky. He saw a small group of black objects like clouds rising up quickly and rushed into the sky. In the blink of an eye, it disappeared. The flame also fell down and returned to its normal height. Boss Qiao looked at the crucible. The ore softened and turned into a metal liquid. The pure black liquid seemed to be slightly dark red.
Boss Qiao was overjoyed and threw the iron ore given by the man in gray into the crucible. The iron ore was at high temperature or with the assistance of black ore, and turned into iron more blocked than usual. The iron ore brought by the man in gray was very pure. I don’t know if it had been processed twice and basically had no impurities. Soon the two metal liquids merged into one.
Boss Qiao quickly poured the mixed ore liquid into the mold brought by the man in gray. It was a mold of two daggers. The amount of mixed liquid was very accurate, and it was basically not much or less when poured into the mold. Boss Qiao waited for the metal liquid to cool and solidify in the air, and then placed it in the well water to cool down. After cooling, the mold was removed.
While waiting for the cooling, he remembered his son Yong'er. Yong'er fell asleep again during the long wait. Boss Qiao looked at Yong'er's right face, which was cut by a porcelain bowl. The wound was about ten centimeters long, and it didn't look serious. The child recovered quickly and the wound was healing. He felt guilty, but he was excited to think about the twenty taels of silver that the man in gray was about to bring, what kind of new clothes, what kind of toys to buy for Yong'er, and what kind of flower show to go to the town to watch.
The two short swords were formed. Boss Qiao equipped them with the small hilts brought by the man in gray. He looked at the two swords. Boss Qiao is not a weapon expert, but has also fought many weapons. He could also see that the two swords seemed extraordinary, which looked a bit similar to ordinary iron tools, but seemed completely different. He stared at the sword body, and the sword was more like the color of the black ore brought by the man in gray.
Strangely, the sword seemed to be staring at him.
