Chapter 125 Attack
The battle began soon...
As expected, as I thought, the Soviet army was not in a hurry to attack this time, but occupied favorable terrain outside the valley to build fortifications...
This is the first step in a protracted war. I think they should plan to defeat our Xigeo Valley in one to two months... The Soviet army realized at this time that the war in Afghanistan could not end in a short period of time, so they were very patient.
It is precisely because they are patient and prepared to fight a protracted battle... so they need an outpost, which is a base that confronts our Sigeo Valley... This base is located on a small hill not far from the valley. In fact, it is also a high ground more than 200 meters high, but for Afghanistan, which is always a few thousand meters above sea level, it is really a small hill.
Originally, this small hill could be said to be safe to defend, because too many high grounds are higher than it, and you can just set up a mortar to hit the hill from a high point... But the point is that this hill is facing the mouth of the valley north of the valley, and the Soviet army also has a lot of modern equipment... A slight transformation turns this hill into a copper wall!
The first method of transformation is to build roads... This was not difficult for the Soviet army. Several bulldozers came up, and then explosives were cleaned. In just half a day, a "Z"-shaped road was built on the back of the hill to the top of the mountain... By the way, the Soviet army was also experienced and skilled in building such roads. Because the Salang Highway was responsible for too many transportation tasks, it either broke here or collapsed there... Since the beginning of the war, the Soviet army's engineering team had never rested... So such a small project was of course no problem for them!
After the road was completed, several tank fortifications were tossed on the top of the mountain... The so-called tank fortifications are a bit similar to the inclined surface built by the Vietnamese army that facilitates tank artillery, but the tank fortifications built by the Soviet army are more comprehensive...
Behind this fortification is a tank fortress, just like a tunnel, the top is made of logs and sandbags, and there is a triangle not far ahead... The so-called triangle is tilted downwards on one side and tilted upwards on the other side... Simply put, there is a slope downwards and upwards.
There is no need to say more about what is done for... Tanks not only have limits on the upward elevation angle, but also on the downward inclination angle. However, if these two are made... one is next to the other and the upward inclination surface, the angle problem of tank guns can be solved to a great extent... So eight tanks lined up on the top of the mountain, and a few anti-aircraft machine guns were arranged in the middle of the tank... basically blocked the entrance of the Xigeo Valley!
The advantage of this arrangement is that... the tank can bomb all targets on the opposite side in all directions. When attacked, it can also retreat to the tank fort to avoid. What's more powerful is that there is a night vision device on the tank... In other words, this kind of defense is all-weather and not restricted by day and night.
From this aspect... the Soviet army has effectively utilized their tanks. You should know that one of the most important functions of tanks is their mobility... But the problem is that in Afghanistan, tanks will face a dilemma... If you want to maneuver, you cannot hit the target, and if you can hit the target, you cannot hit it!
So the fate of tanks in Afghanistan is... either they were driven back to China or used as a turret like now!
I believe this is not taught by the Vietnamese consulting group... because "batteries" like this can be seen everywhere on the Sarang Highway, but those "batteries" are not as many as here... Eight cars were brought up at once, and the most advanced T72 was all the same.
After this arrangement was completed... the Soviet army transported the troops and supplies.
Of course... these actions were carried out under the cover of Soviet armed helicopters... They did not launch an attack immediately after they came up, but built fortifications.
What surprised us was that... the Soviets built a back-sloping fortification. After the construction was completed, they concentrated their supplies and troops on the hills and used them as a base for attacking the Sigeo Valley... Only in this way can the troops and supplies be guaranteed that there will be no supply cut off. We can launch a continuous attack to create as much impact as possible on the enemy!
As for where this tactic comes from... I don't need to say more, it must be the trick of the Vietnamese advisory group!
Only then did the war begin...
As I thought before, the Soviet army's offense could be said to be harassment or attack...They have not many troops, with only two platoons on the left and right. The cover firepower comes from the tank positions on the hills. Of course, the armed helicopters are also involved... But what surprised me was that there were only two armed helicopters on the front. The remaining ten... These also include Mi8 helicopters carrying weapons, all of which were circling around the two wings of the mountain pass.
I quickly understood the Soviet army's tactics...
This time they focused their attacks on the mortar positions we placed in the mountains of the two wings...
Of course, the Soviet army's tactics were correct, because from their last painful failure, we knew... the focus of the defense of the Xigeo Valley was not actually the mountain pass, but the mortars distributed in the mountains on both wings. These mortar positions were not solved... Then any person or equipment entering the valley could be bombarded by these artillery fire!
So... they decided to clear our army's mortar positions this time!
Now... we only have two choices in the face of the Soviet attack:
One is not to use mortars... but if the mortars are not used, even if the Yamaguchi position has complete fortifications... it is afraid it will be difficult to last fortifications under the all-round attacks of Soviet helicopters, tanks and infantry.
Another option is to use a mortar...
Doing so can indeed defend the Yamaguchi... because mortars can effectively attack the Soviet army charging towards the Yamaguchi.
However... the mortar will be discovered by the Soviet helicopters after several shells are fired. What will happen next is not difficult to imagine... The Soviet armed helicopter quickly locked the artillery urgency position, and then put down the infantry carried on the Mi8 helicopter to cooperate with the armed helicopter to attack these artillery urgency positions...
As long as they can pull out these artillery-forced positions one by one, then victory will be not far from the Soviet army!
The reason they didn't do this last time... was entirely because they wanted to fight quickly, or they didn't expect that we would use this mortar tactic. But this time... they had plenty of time to fight slowly with us!
