Chapter 2208 The New Righteousness

Confucianism has always been known for its retro and conservatism. It must be praised for its words for the three generations, and its conduct must be followed by ancient rituals. However, this is just a superficial article. In fact, Confucianism is the most fickle and is the most capable of keeping up with the changes of the times among the various schools of thought. From Confucius to Mencius, to Xunzi and Dong Zhongshu, it has been adjusting and expanding Confucianism to adapt to the needs of the times, but they just refuse to admit it.

The late Han Dynasty was an era of decline in classics, and there was an inherent need for change. The new policy was implemented in the Central Plains and Jiangdong, and there were tremendous changes in both economy and thought. The Confucian school, which has always regarded itself as an imperial teacher, could not remain indifferent. The first to react was the Jiangdong people, especially the Wujun people.

As a sacrificial sacrificial sect in Wujun County, Lu Kang was unwilling to do so. Faced with Sun Ce's inquiry, he brought up the long-planned new theory of righteousness and profit.

It is appropriate to be righteous, follow me and follow the sheep.

Sheep is auspiciousness, which extends to goodness, beauty, and overlaps with profit. In essence, Confucianism does not oppose profit, but only opposes unjust benefits. In the Mencius era, overcorrection and opposition between justice and profit becomes more and more serious, which makes Confucianism seem to be pedantic and unkind, and then develops into hypocrisy. However, as a political philosophy, Confucianism will not and cannot ignore the value of profit. From a family to a country, if it wants to move normally, it is impossible not to pay attention to profit. However, Confucianism pursues public benefits and great benefits, hoping to develop stably and maintain long-term stability, rather than being prosperous and unrest. It is good intentions and has a vision, but Confucianism emphasizes morality too much, public benefits, and ignores small profits and self-interests, which instead creates a group of hypocrites with different hearts.

Therefore, in the past two thousand years of history, Confucianism has made steady contributions, but its development is powerless. It has gradually been tamed by imperial power, rigid and conservative, and lost its vitality, becoming an obstacle to historical progress.

Fortunately, the decline of classics in the Han Dynasty was only the first cycle. Although I encountered trouble, my energy was still there, and I still had the ability and courage to innovate myself.

Lu Kang's view is very complicated, and he quotes the classics, which makes Sun Ce a little dizzy, but it is actually simple to summarize: we should adjust the concepts and standards of righteousness according to the new economic situation, strengthen moral education, and avoid the officials and the people being profit-oriented. For example, craftsmen and merchants have become scholars and cannot be regarded as lowly as before. We should ask them based on the standards of scholars, rather than just unilaterally respect them.

If they want to gain respect, they should first meet certain moral standards and deserve respect. Whether it is freedom or respect, they are restricted. Freedom and respect without restrictions will only cause chaos. Public and private interests cannot be guaranteed, so naturally there is no long-term stability.

Lu Kang finally concluded: Whether it is a gentleman or a commoner, he should be respectful and fearful, otherwise, just like the Tao of Futu, everything is empty, without a king or a father, neither a family nor a country.

Sun Ce did not fully agree with Lu Kang's suggestion, the fundamental reason was that he did not fully understand but expressed his approval of the adjustment principle. This is exactly the change he expected. Confucian scholars must not only adapt to the changes of the times, but also be able to be ahead of the times and lead the times. Only by forming this virtuous cycle can his ultimate goal be achieved.

After listening to Lu Kang's advice, Sun Ce also opened his heart to Lu Kang and explained why he was not prohibited from Fu Tu.

He had no feelings for Buddhism as a religion, but he was still interested in Buddhism as a philosophy. Buddhism emphasizes thinking and emphasizes logic very much. This is valuable for Central Plains culture. The fundamental reason why Confucian scholars and Taoist priests could not argue with monks is that Confucianism. Taoism is not as rigorous as Buddhism in logic. It often lingers itself in as it is said and finally can only force the reason.

"Learning cannot be fully blamed. I hope that a sage will create a set of knowledge that is all-encompassing and universal. As long as future generations follow it, it is the thinking of the weak and foolish. Knowledge is like a child, and it must always grow up to become a useful talent. It is impossible to blame the ancients when they are born with omniscient and omnipotent."

Lu Kang smiled and said nothing. Although he agreed with Sun Ce's point of view, he was a Confucian scholar after all, and could not deny the sages in front of Sun Ce. The facts were facts and could not be accepted emotionally. Of course, he felt a little uncomfortable when he saw Sun Ce's logic of advocating the Futu Dao. After being abused by Yan Fu for so long, he was used to being furious when he heard the three words Futu Dao.

"Does the logic mentioned by the king prove to be the same as the reasoning used by the Western Regions for mathematical and metaphysical reasoning?"

Sun Ce nodded with a smile. "Jijiu also studies these knowledge?"

"I have read some of them, but I don't understand them deeply. Last time Lu Xun returned to his hometown to visit his relatives, and mentioned the use of mathematics and physics in the two battles between Junyi and Dingtao. The old minister was a little moved. Now all industries are prosperous, and they are thousands of miles a day and cannot be separated from the help of mathematics and physics. As a county priest, you can't know anything. When it comes to this matter, there is something that the king has to come forward to coordinate."

"Mr. Lu may as well speak out."

"The old minister wants to offer courses related to mathematics in the county school. He teaches mathematics knowledge other than nine chapters, so he doesn't need to be too profound. Just let students understand it. If they encounter problems in the future, they can estimate them in advance, so that they will not say anything unrealistic about scholars and make people laugh."

"This is a good thing."

"Good things are good things, but it is not easy for a calculation teacher. The old minister sent an invitation to Zhao Ying, but he refused. He said he had to study too many topics and was too busy to be busy."

Sun Ce smiled. "Mr. Lu didn't give the money, right?"

"I gave it, but the county school expenses are also large, and the old minister could only pay 300 s. I thought it was a lot, but it was not normal teaching. I only took classes once every five days. Later, after asking, I found out that these masters of mathematics are very popular now. They just go to a party and give a class, which is tens of thousands of yuan. They look down on the reward of 300 s. "Lu Kang spread his hands helplessly. "The world is bustling, and everyone is for profit. Now those who do academics have become profit-seekers, which is really worrying."

Sun Ce was also surprised. Can Zhao Ying get ten thousand yuan in a class? "Who is the one who invites him to give a lecture? He is so generous?"

"There are many businessmen, and there are some powerful people with art and elegance. Not only Zhao Ying, but also famous scholars are among the invitations. It doesn't matter if you don't understand it. It's a good way to invite famous scholars to speak. Yan Futu can gather so much money, and this is how it is. I heard that when he is the busiest, he can talk three times a day, one in the morning, one in the afternoon, and one in the evening."

Sun Ce heard the sour taste in Lu Kang's voice. In order to see Yan Fuchao, he learned some rumors about Yan Fuchao and the Futu Taoist. Yan Fuchao is so popular, although it is related to the fact that the Futu Taoist is a new thing, but also about stepping on the Confucian sect. Half of the Futu Taoist can have the momentum of today was debated with other academic debates. It is meaningless to say one person, and the debate between two people is more attractive. This is the case with the Futu Taoist and the Confucian sect. However, he is always abused and naturally he is no longer interested.

"I'll talk to Xu Gonghe. To be honest, Mr. Lu said that I had such a plan. Whether I will go to literature, martial arts, work or business in the future, it's always good to know some mathematics knowledge. Unexpectedly, Mr. Lu took the lead. In terms of trends, or my Wu County first, even a scholar like Mr. Lu dared to seek new things and change."

Lu Kang said a few humble words, and his heart felt sweet as honey. With Sun Ce's words, Wujun's unique status would be stable. It would be even better if he could preside over the implementation of the new Yili theory, protect the development of the Wu Kingdom, and provide an ideological program.

While the iron was hot, Lu Kang invited Sun Ce to have a discussion with the teachers and students of the county school.

Sun Ce happily agreed. He came to the county school today to give Lu Kang and Wujun County School. No matter what, Wujun is his own county and the capital of Jiangdong. It is his foundation and should be taken care of.

With Sun Ce's consent, Lu Kang immediately asked Sun Ce to go downstairs and climb to the lecture hall. The moment he learned that Sun Ce was coming, he had this idea and summoned all teachers and students to listen to the lecture. At that time, Sun Ce gave a lecture at the Nanyang Martial Arts Hall, discussing the three realms of scholars, and wrote by Cai Yan, leaving behind a great article in "The Secretariat", which has been passed down as a good story. Now that Sun Ce has arrived in Wujun, he naturally has to do a big article to demonstrate the style of the Fengming land of Sun Wu.

The stairs of the county school were full of people. In addition to the teachers and students of the county school, there were also some teachers and students of the wooden school, martial arts hall, and government affairs hall that heard the news. They couldn't sit in the yard and even the walls were full. There were men and women, old and young, but they were unconventional and competing for beauty. There were two people fighting for a foothold in the corner of the wall, one was a flower-like girl in a strong outfit, and the other was a white-haired old man in a Confucian shirt, each of whom was flirting with Wuyin. You said and I said, the girl's voice was crisp, and she spoke like a pearl falling from a jade plate, as fast as a rain, and the old man's voice was low, like a guqin scattered sound, neither too slow nor too slow, calm, like a duet of grandparents and grandchildren, with a unique flavor. He was cheering loudly on the side, not afraid of big things.

Seeing Lu Kang attracting Sun Ce to appear, the hall suddenly became quiet. Even the quarreling girl and the old man stopped, glared at each other, and reluctantly shared their foothold.

Lu Kang first introduced several teachers and outstanding students, and then explained to everyone the conversation with Sun Ce just now. Especially the part about Yan Futu was very detailed and vivid, making people immersive, which surprised Sun Ce a little. It didn't realize that Lu Kang also had the ability to write a storyteller. Kunqu opera, which originated in Wu in later generations, was called the ancestor of a hundred operas and was popular for a while. It seems that there is a reason.

When they learned that Sun Ce had just been impressed by Yan Fuchao, the teachers and students of the county school were happy. During this period, they were hit hard by Yan Fuchao. Many people were preparing to report Yan Fuchao's darkness when Sun Ce came. However, before they could take action, Sun Ce suppressed the arrogant Yan Fuchao in just a few words, which was so satisfying that the favorable impression of Sun Ce was immediately increased by several levels.

During the meal, someone asked Sun Ce about his impression of the Buddha Dao again. Sun Ce explained roughly, but he did not limit himself to Buddhism, but talked about Greece and Rome. He told the teachers and students of the county school that in the era of Lao Tzu and Confucius, several wise men appeared in the farther West, and they proposed some new theories. These theories and Central Plains have their own advantages and are worthy of careful study. When doing academic research, one should be like bees collecting flowers and making honey, taking the strengths of a hundred schools of thought, and forming a single word. Only in this way can knowledge be renewed day by day. If you always wander around in the circles drawn by predecessors, you will not have a future.

Sun Ce said passionately that respecting teachers and Taoism is not about following the predecessors, but rather, standing on the basis of predecessors, making new discoveries, daring to see what the predecessors have never seen, saying what the predecessors have never said, removing the thoughts and doctrines of predecessors have always been carried forward. Only in this way can we go further and more steadily when we go out in the future. We are not conquering, but spreading civilization. Just like our giant stone throwing machine, it is not just a powerful weapon, but also a symbol of civilization and wisdom.

The teachers and students were excited and cheered in unison.

After the group mocked the Buddha Dao, Lu Kang introduced the main topic and called on all the students to ask Sun Ce for questions. Several older teachers were humble to each other and refused to ask questions first. Lu Kang glanced at him, and a young Confucian scholar in the hall stood up and bowed to Sun Ce.

"Gu Shao, whose courtesy name is Xiaoze, dares to ask the king to explain justice and profit."

Sun Ce understood it. Lu Kang's new theory on ethics is so complicated and meticulous, so he naturally prepared for a long time. He didn't answer positively just now, and he just wanted to wait until now to preach in public. Gu Shao is Gu Yong's eldest son, Lu Kang's grandson, and an excellent graduate of the county school. He graduated from the county school a year ago and is now studying in the government affairs hall. He studied under the priest Huang Wan, and was deeply appreciated by Huang Wan. He asked the first question, which was naturally arranged by Lu Kang.

This opportunity to become famous will naturally be left to young talents in Wujun.

Sun Ce nodded with a smile and said slowly: "I just heard Mr. Lu talk about justice and profit, but I still have not finished my wishes. I should discuss with you. However, the lonely martial artist has limited reading, so I am afraid that I cannot quote the scriptures like Mr. Lu. I have a brilliant literary talent. I hope you don't laugh at the shallow parts."

Lu Kang stroked his beard and laughed loudly: "The king is humble, and the old minister is ashamed of himself. The book cannot be fully spoken, and the words do not fully express. The Tao is discussed. Although the king is not good at the scriptures, he can directly point to the origin of the Tao, which is not the old minister. The teachers and students of our county recite scriptures and devote themselves to learning. Today, they are about to hear the words of the King's warriors, breaking the sharp edge, pointing directly to the key points, breaking the barriers, hoping to make progress and open up a new world."

"Yes!" Everyone cheered again.

"Shame, ashamed." Sun Ce bowed his hands and said with a smile: "You guys have too much expectations, but I am afraid of walking on thin ice, which is even more nervous than facing Yuan Shao's 100,000 troops back then."

Everyone laughed again. Someone shouted loudly: "Hebei Yifu, how can I be the elite of Jiangdong? What the king treats today are talents from Jiangdong, and he should be more attentive than when he was in Guandu."

Sun Ce refused to laugh. The children of Jiangdong are now very crazy and are simply blind. This is because the queen comes from the Yuan family in Runan, otherwise they would be scolded not only from Hebei, but also from Yuzhou.

After laughing for a while, Sun Ce turned to Gu Shao. "Dare you to ask about filial piety, which is the basis of righteousness or profit?"

Gu Shao was calm and blurted out. "Profit is the basis. People do not survive without profit, families do not prosper, and countries do not have profits."

Sun Ce nodded in admiration. "How is righteousness and profit?"

"Right is different from profit. Those who are in harmony with righteousness are public benefits, great benefits, and profits of righteousness. Those who are not in harmony with righteousness are small benefits, personal benefits, and unrighteous benefits. A gentleman should take the benefits of righteousness and abandon the benefits of unrighteousness."

Sun Ce turned around. "Do you guys have any objections?"

Everyone looked at each other, shook their heads, and some people spoke up to agree with Gu Shao's opinion. This is normal. What Gu Shao said was originally a view of justice and profit that everyone recognized. No matter whether they were a Confucian scholar or not, there would be no objection to this view.

Sun Ce shook his head. "I forgot that I am shallow in my knowledge and I dare not agree."

"Please give advice from the king." Gu Shao was neither humble nor arrogant, and bowed his hands to show his respect, but he was a little excited in his eyes. He was not afraid that Sun Ce would have any objections, but he was afraid that Sun Ce would have no objections. Only when there was objections could there be arguments, and only when there was arguments could there be enlightenment and attract more people's attention.

"Public and private, big or small, are relative, and cannot be completely different. Naturally, they cannot be justified in common, and small or small or unrighteous. For example, the Gu family in Wu County has a prosperous race and hundreds of household registrations. For the country, Gu family is small or private. For you, Gu Xiao, Gu family is big or public. So is the profit of Gu family public or private, big or small? It cannot be said that Gu family's profit is suddenly righteous and unrighteous."

Gu Shao was nervous. Sun Ce specifically mentioned that the Gu family in Wujun had a great cause, was it a matter of unintentional words or something else? However, he quickly calmed down and asked, "According to the king's opinion, public benefits will be unjust, big benefits will be unjust, and small benefits will be righteous?"

"Gu Ke didn't say that." Sun Ce pointed at Gu Shao and said with a smile: "You are trying to inflict a crime."

Everyone laughed. Gu Shao also smiled and bowed. "Boy doesn't dare."

Sun Ce put away his smile. "This is actually a logical question. Silent words are not righteousness of the great princes, and small private parts are unrighteous. It is just that the great princes have righteousness and unrighteousness, and the same is true for small private parts. It is not as filial piety says. Righteousness and unrighteousness do not depend on public and private parts, big and small, but on the rules of unrighteousness. If the rules are in line with the rules, righteousness, and unrighteousness will be unrighteous. Just as filial piety will debate with the orphan, we cannot be right because the orphan is the king of Wu, and filial piety will be wrong. We cannot be wrong because the orphan is the king of Wu, and filial piety will be right because the orphan is the king of Wu, and who is the common man."

He paused, turned to ask Gu Shao and said, "Do you agree with filial piety?"

Gu Shao smiled and said, "What the king said is very true." He looked up at Sun Ce and said, "I heard for a long time that the king distinguished right from wrong and did not force others with his power. When I saw him today, it was indeed the case. It is our blessing to have such a wise king and the blessing to the world."

"Yes!" Everyone agreed in unison.

Sun Ce smiled and waved his hand again, signaling everyone to be quiet. "Since you are sitting and discussing Taoism, you must naturally convince people with reason. If you get up and practice Taoism, it is not the case. It depends on who has a hard fist and who has a fast knife. Therefore, if you want to sit and discuss Taoism with others, you must first have the ability to practice Taoism. Otherwise, if the other party disagrees with the other party, he will cut it and cannot even save his life, so what else can he do?"

Gu Shaoqiang smiled and said, "If this is the case, the boy will not dare to speak. Who doesn't know that the king has outstanding martial arts skills and is invincible in the world?"

"Are you afraid?"

Under Sun Ce's smile, Gu Shao became even more embarrassed and his smile was a little unnatural. "...I'm afraid." The lobby also quieted down, and everyone looked at each other, wondering why Sun Ce suddenly changed his face and threatened him.

"Then do you know why Gu didn't cut you down?"

"Of course... the king is kind."

Sun Ce shook his head and laughed. "I don't draw my sword to cut you down, not because of kindness, but because of no profit. Discussing the Tao is to tell right and wrong, but if I do right, why kill you? If I do wrong, even if I put the knife on your neck and force you to admit defeat, it will be useless. It will only continue to make mistakes. Moreover, everyone will be in danger, the world will be uneasy, and there will be endless troubles. Killing you without profit is unjust. Do not do unjust things, otherwise it will harm others and yourself. Righteousness and profit are originally two sides of the same thing, not completely opposite."

Gu Shao was stunned. After a long time of reaction, he couldn't help but be surprised and happy. He let out a long sigh, and was angry. It was a bit embarrassing to be played with by Sun Ce in the public court. "The way of reasoning in the king is really unique."

“Are you particularly touched?”

"Uh... I will never forget it for life." Gu Shao thought about it carefully, and felt that although Sun Ce's move was frivolous, he could explain it in a straightforward manner. "According to the king's words, righteousness and profit are one. Those who are in harmony with righteousness will be beneficial, and those who are in profit will be consistent with righteousness?"

"Do you think?"

Gu Shao smiled and shook his head. "Please give an explanation to the king."

"I just said that your logic is not thorough enough, you will miss the other and generalize it with a partiality. Profits are of public or private size, and it is difficult to take into account both. If public or private interests are combined, public or profit may not be combined with personal interests, and if large or large, it may not be combined with small or small. How can you generalize them?"

Gu Shao was silent and didn't know how to answer for a moment. Everyone felt a little confused, and they whispered and discussed it. Lu Kang saw it and felt a little regretful. He wanted Gu Shao to become famous, but he didn't expect Gu Shao to be surrounded by Sun Ce one after another and could not escape. Thinking about it, Yan Fuchao was so eloquent that Sun Ce was speechless. Gu Shao was not Yan Fuchao's opponent at all, so how could he speak better than Sun Ce?

Lu Kang originally wanted to help, but then he thought about it and swallowed the words that came to his mouth. Gu Shao was actually a little conceited when he was successful in his youth. Even if Yan Fuchao was justified by reason, he was still dissatisfied. He always felt that Yan Fuchao was both Confucian and the meaning of the Fuchao Sutra, but he suffered a loss if he didn't understand the meaning of the Fuchao Sutra. If he had time to study the meaning of the Fuchao Sutra, he would naturally be better than Yan Fuchao. Now that he was frustrated in front of Sun Ce, he might make him humble.

As we all know, Sun Ce read a little, let alone the Futu Sutra, even the Confucian scriptures were limited. From this we can see that whether you know or not has any necessary relationship with whether you read or not or how many books you read. What is important is whether you can be good at thinking and learn from one example or another.

Gu Shao weighed the pros and conscientiously thought for a long time. "Is the king's intention that the righteousness should be like profit, and the size of the public and private sectors?"

"If you are filial, you are worthy of the handsomeness of Wu County. Even if you are not good at it, you will not be far away." Sun Ce nodded and gave Gu Shao a positive evaluation. Gu Shao was able to understand his intentions in such a short time, and he was indeed worthy of the name of talent and courage. "If you study and learn, you should not be biased. You should discuss it repeatedly to avoid any intention or ambiguity. Righteousness and profit are not opposite, but they are not integrated. If you want to be at peace, you must be at peace with each other. Not only can you not harm the public with your own interests, but you cannot harm the big with your own interests, nor can you harm the public with your own interests, and you cannot harm the private interests with your own interests. Only in this way can you be at peace with your own interests and be at peace with your own interests."

Sun Ce turned around and bowed to Lu Kang. "Duke Lu, whether this new Yili can do this is to establish rules and regulations for our Great Wu depends on the knowledge and courage of Mr. Lu and you all. Work hard!"

Lu Kang was in a state of great emotion and happily accepted the order. "If there is a great king, I dare not do my best."
