Chapter 67 Death of Li Xuelian

Different from the gentleness of "Zhongshan", the style of "Harvest" appears to be relatively cutting-edge. Their magazine always collects some works that are "ignorant of current affairs". For example, in 1987, the magazine successively published works by Ma Yuan and Yu Hua
, Hong Feng, Su Tong and others' works, so it is jokingly called the birthplace of the avant-garde by some people.
When it comes to literary exploration, "Harvest" has always been at the forefront, but sometimes it seems a little impulsive.
Since it is an exploration, it may not be right every time, and sometimes there will be some works that people at the time do not like, and future generations will not like it even more. But these explorations will be meaningful.
In addition, the content of "Harvest" is more complex. They have opened columns such as "Cultural Journey" and "Morning and Dusk Picking Up Flowers", among which Yu Qiuyu's "Cultural Journey" is the most well-known.
Of course, magazine editors also have their own little thoughts, and there is also a "vulgar" side to the magazine. Articles such as "X Open Woman" have a strong reader effect and make ordinary readers find it quite "interesting".
The critical article Yu Dong wrote before was originally intended to be published in "Yenjing Literature" because the literary criticism section of "Yenjing Literature" was very popular at the time. Yu Dong's article was a new novel, but it was
Literary criticism.
But later his teacher Hu Yueming suggested that he give "Harvest" a try, because at that time "Harvest" was looking for "miscellaneous" works and wanted to accept some works that were different from the previous ones.
After hearing what Hu Yueming said, Yu Dong gave it a try. Unexpectedly, the manuscript was passed quickly.
Later, Yu Dong learned that Hu Yueming was very familiar with the magazine's deputy editor-in-chief, Programming Yongxing.
At that time, Yu Dong was a dazed young man. When he found out about this, he felt that he had been "humiliated". He was afraid that others would think that he had gone through the back door to get the manuscript, so he went to ask his teacher Hu Yueming.
Hu Yueming laughed after hearing what Yu Dong said: Do you think my hand can reach into "Harvest"? After reading for so many years, you don't even understand the simple truth of not avoiding enemies when doing things externally and not avoiding relatives when doing things internally?
Later, Yu Dong hadn't submitted an article to the magazine for a long time, and Hu Yueming specifically asked him if he still remembered about "Harvest".
Of course Yu Dong would not stop publishing novels because of that incident, but at that time he was focused on learning and felt that both novels and poetry were trivial.
After hearing Yu Dong's explanation, Hu Yueming didn't say anything, because their literature department did not write novels.
Thinking of the past, Yu Dong also felt a little nostalgic. Although he was a young man at that time and had done many embarrassing things, those impulsive days were also a good memory.
Looking back at Wang Yu's letter, Yu Dong thought for a while and decided to submit a manuscript to him.
In his previous life, he wrote a novella six months before his death, called "Death of a Widow." The style is a bit novel now, so I'm afraid it may not be suitable to choose "Zhongshan". "Harvest" is a good choice.
The general content of "Death of a Widow" is that a young widow was reviled by the locals because of a novel written by a local writer, and finally committed suicide due to the humiliation.
In less than 50,000 words, Yu Dong used three perspectives.
In fact, there should be two perspectives, because this novel also contains a novel, which is a novel written by a local writer.
At the beginning of the story, "I" was on the way to school when I saw Yu Xizheng, a former teacher and now a full-time provincial writer, and a young woman quarreling across a river.
"You've made yourself famous as a murderer of a thousand swords, so I can no longer be a human being!"
"The widow I wrote has nothing to do with you, you can make up for it yourself!"
From the conversation between the two, "I" got the general idea that Yu Xi had written a well-known novel in which a young widow had a problematic lifestyle and seduced men everywhere.
After reading the novel, the locals looked for the prototype in reality, and finally found the widow named Li Xuelian, and firmly believed that the widow in Yu Xi's novel was her.
Li Xuelian was looked down upon and insulted by the locals every day, so he regarded Yu Xi as his sworn enemy.
That day, Yu Xi went back to his hometown for business, and happened to run into Li Xuelian. When his enemies met, they were extremely jealous and began to curse across the river.
At the end of the scolding, Li Xuelian jumped directly into the river and tried to climb to the other side of the river to fight Yu Xi, but Yu Xi ran away first.
Li Xuelian chased him for a while with her clothes wet, but in the end she couldn't catch up.
"I" watched the play not far away for a long time, feeling interesting but also feeling disappointed, because Yu Xi often lectured "me" when he was teaching in school, and "I" couldn't stand him.
Later, "I" went out to read Yu Xi's novel.
The content of the novel is very simple. It tells about a local middle school principal who was corrupt and had an extramarital affair with a local widow. In the end, the principal was investigated and the widow was ruthless and didn't even take a look.
After "I" read the novel, I couldn't help but sigh. No wonder the locals thought Li Xuelian was the prototype, because at least half of the descriptions of the widow in it resembled Li Xuelian.
In addition, a principal was indeed dismissed at that time, so people believed that the novel contained reality.
Li Xuelian refused to be humiliated and jumped into the river one day and died.
After Yu Xi learned that the widow was dead, he ran to "us" and asked why Li Xuelian was forced to death.
"I" told him with a smile: You should be the one who forced Li Xuelian to death.
Another person patted Yu Xi on the shoulder: It was you who exposed the darkness. She committed suicide out of fear of crime.

The story ends here.
There are a total of two "I"s in the three perspectives in the novel. The first "I" is a middle school student in a certain school who encounters a quarrel between the writers Yu Xi and Li Xuelian.
The second "I" is the teacher in the novel written by Yu Xi. This "I" witnessed the whole process of the principal's dismissal and peace with the widow.
In addition to the two "Is", there is also the perspective of the writer Yu Xi, who explains the whole process of writing the novel at that time. The principal's fall was true. As for the reconciliation with the widow, it was just that he met Li Xuelian one day and thought Li Xuelian was beautiful.
I just wrote it into the novel based on her.
When Yu Dong wrote this novel and Yu Xi's novel, he used completely different narrative techniques. One is realism and has a changeable narrative sequence, including interludes, sequences, and reverse narrations, while the other is completely sequential narration.
, there is no narration, flashback, and many repeated narrations, and it is a typical new historicist novel.
For now, this is indeed a rare innovation, and from another perspective, it is also a return to realism.
Such an article will probably be favored by Harvest.
