"Shuowen Jiezi", referred to as "Shuowen", is a Chinese reference book compiled by Xu Shen, a classical scholar and philologist of the Eastern Han Dynasty. It is China's earliest Chinese dictionary that systematically analyzes the glyphs and origins of Chinese characters. It is also the world's first Chinese dictionary. One of the earliest dictionaries.

When this book was compiled, it gave a detailed explanation of the "Six Books" for the first time.

The so-called Liushu refers to the method of tying Chinese characters.

Xu Shen's explanation is: "Zhou Li entered primary school at the age of eight, and Bao Shi taught Guozi, first learning the Six Books.

One is to refer to things, which refers to things. They can be recognized by looking at them, and their meaning can be seen by looking at them. This means that they are up and down;

The second is pictograms. Pictograms are drawn into objects, and they are interrogated according to the body, such as the sun and the moon;

The third one is the phonogram. The phonogram is named after something and uses examples to complement each other. This is the case for rivers;

The fourth is "knowing one's mind", "knowing one's mind" is similar to "heyi", so as to point out the falsehood, Wu Xin is also the same;

The fifth is to transfer annotations. Those who transfer annotations, build a similar poem, agree to accept each other, and test the old truth;

The sixth one is borrowing under false pretenses. Those who borrow under false pretenses have no actual words. They rely on the voice to entrust things, and the commander is like this."

This is a very insightful conclusion, and it has not been changed for thousands of years. Even when it came to re-creating and simplifying Chinese characters, the "Six Books" principle was still followed.

With the "six books" criterion, Xu Shen can set "radicals".

This book is the first to create radicals for Chinese characters, which complies with the requirements of the times to unify and standardize Chinese characters. It is based on the principle of "similar things are grouped together, things are divided into groups, they are related to each other, they share the same rationale, they are mixed but not transcendent, and they are connected according to their shapes" , based on the shape of the glyph, the training is based on the shape, and the same shape and side characters in the Chinese characters are used as the basis for classification. It is divided into 540 radicals, including 9353 characters, and "Chongwen". That is, there are 1,163 variant characters, totaling 10,516 characters.

The book contains a total of fifteen volumes, of which the first fourteen volumes are text explanations, with the prefixes written in small seal script.

The ancient classics cited are not only limited to "Poems", "Books", "Li", "Yi", and "Spring and Autumn", but also "Laozi", "Mozi", "Han Feizi", "Guoyu", "Book of Yizhou", "Chu Ci" and "History". "The Classic of Mountains and Seas", "Sima Fa", "Taiyi Classic", etc., involving knowledge of heaven and earth, ghosts and gods, mountains and rivers, vegetation, birds and beasts, insects, sundries, strange things, royal systems, etiquette and other disciplines. Explain the source of the fonts word by word;

At that time, it was true that only Xu Shen had this ability.

Xu Shen lived in an era where the struggle between the two major schools of modern and classical literature was intense.

Jinwen refers to the official script, and Guwen refers to the ancient texts of the Six Kingdoms of Pre-Qin Dynasty.

Due to the different written texts, ancient classics were divided into modern classics and ancient classics at that time.

This was originally just a difference in fonts, but the researchers formed different academic factions.

The Jinwen Jing school believes that the scriptures are the words of sages, and every word and sentence contains "small meanings" that can be applied to the world. They often quote the scriptures out of context and make arbitrary extensions and comparisons.

The Ancient Classics School believes that the meaning of scriptures should be interpreted objectively based on the meaning of the words, and the study of language and characters should be valued to establish its lofty status in the study of classics.

Xu Shen was a scholar of ancient Chinese classics, at a time when the modern classics school was gradually declining and the ancient classics school was gradually flourishing.

He could not tolerate the distortion of words in order to apply them to the world, so he lashed out at those vulgar Confucians who "played with their habits and concealed what they hoped to hear", as well as those who "competed with each other to explain the scriptures and called Qin's official script the Cangjie period."

He believed that writing was "the foundation of classics and art and the beginning of royal government." Misinterpreting writing would inevitably tamper with "classical art" and be detrimental to "kingly government."
