Chapter 1 Paper Dolls Are Not in Pairs
Ever since I can remember, I have always felt that my father was doing strange things.
My grandfather always sneaks into the mountains carrying a sack on his back in the middle of the night. The sack my grandfather has packed must be as tall as a person. Although the sack is bulging with stuff, it only weighs a little when you lift it.
I have always been curious about what was in my grandfather's sack. But I couldn't untie the rope that tied the sack.
I wanted to take a knife and make a slit in the sack to see, but my father looked too closely at the sack, so I never found a chance.
After I asked him several times, my grandfather told me: It was paper money burned for a friend.
My grandfather never burns paper for my mother, so how can he burn paper for others? Moreover, every time he comes back, there is no paper ashes on his body, but he is covered in earthy smell.
Is my father going up the mountain to dig dirt?
Later, the village chief led the police to find my grandfather, and I found out what my grandfather had done.
The village chief said: Someone saw my father quietly burying a sack in my mother's grave. He thought there was something good hidden in it, so he robbed the grave.
As a result, two of the three tomb robbers died on the spot, and one was so frightened that he kept shouting: "There is a ghost! A female ghost in red."
My father was so angry that he turned blue: "Those three people deserved to die, what are you asking me for?"
The village chief said: "Why are there so many paper figures in red clothes buried in your grave? The paper figures are not only tied with iron chains, but also have nails in their eyes."
"You dug up your daughter-in-law's grave just to bury a paper figurine inside? You can't be up to something evil, can you?"
My father didn’t give any face to the village chief: “I’m happy, you take care of it? Isn’t it illegal to bury paper people?”
"You are so meddlesome. Go back and prepare a shroud for the remaining person. He will die tonight."
The village chief was so angry that my father turned blue and white. Seeing that he couldn't get anything out of me, he had no choice but to forget it.
As soon as they left, my grandfather made a paper man about the same size as me and threw it on the kang.
When I opened my eyes in the middle of the night, I saw a paper figure lying next to me. I was immediately frightened.
I said to my father: "Can you throw the paper man somewhere else?"
But my father used ghosts to scare me, saying: "There is a ghost catching a child in the middle of the night. I will put the paper man next to you. When the little ghost comes, he will catch him instead of you."
I really frightened my father, so he lay down next to the paper man and slept.
On the third night after my father put the paper figurine away, I slept until midnight when I suddenly heard a sound like someone scratching the kang mat with their fingernails.
I didn't dare to open my eyes after I woke up in fear, for fear that like my father said, I would see the little devil coming to arrest me.
I held my breath and waited until the movement disappeared, then quietly opened my eyes.
I saw that the paper figure that my grandfather had pierced seemed to have climbed halfway out of the kang, with its hands on the ground and its feet hooked on the edge of the kang, hanging in the air.
I was so frightened that I got out of the bed, only to find that my father had sat on the kang at some point, with one foot pressing on the lower back of the paper man, squishing the middle of the paper man.
Before I could say anything, my father glared and said, "Why are you so dishonest when you sleep? You kicked all the paper figures down. Go to bed quickly."
I was so frightened by my father that I didn't dare to say anything, so I lay back on the bed obediently, but I heard my father say to himself: "No, I have to find another way."
Early the next morning, my grandfather went up the mountain to tinker with trees. After working for half a month, he planted six poplar trees in front of my house and six weeping willow trees behind the house.
People outside say that my grandfather is confused. Who doesn’t know what caused the trouble if there are no poplars planted in front of the house or willows planted behind the house?
Not only did my father not listen to anyone's advice, he even killed the chickens and poured wine to welcome the Twelve Trees, saying that from now on we would be one family with Twelve Trees.
That day, my father also made a rule: in the future, if you ask him to do anything for nothing, you can buy other paper jobs as you like. The boy must use the paper man that my father brought over, otherwise, you can ask whoever you like to do the white matter.
No matter who you ask, he will definitely not reach out.
Because of this matter, I didn't dare to look up at anyone for a long time. It was so embarrassing. I was related to a dozen trees, and I also took away a paper figurine business from others. What kind of things are you doing?
I didn't expect that those trees seemed to be blown by the wind. They grew up several times in a few years and blocked the front and back walls of my house. In summer, the cicadas on the trees were noisy enough to make people's heads crack.
pain.
I always blame my father, why do he plant so many trees when he has nothing to do? Not only do they block the light, but the cicadas are still calling.
My father saw that I was unhappy, so he coaxed me and said he would take me out to have a dinner. I was quite happy at first, but when I went there I realized that he was taking me to do something for someone else!
I reluctantly followed my father to the door of my employer's house. My employer pulled my father aside and whispered, "I know your old rules. Whenever something goes wrong, you must use the paper man you brought."
"Our family has already decided to do the paper work. We have all the boys and girls... Look, you just brought a boy. Isn't that one less boy? Can we not use the paper man? We will pay for the paper work."
Give."
My father's face darkened: "I never ask for money for my paper figurines. If your family doesn't use my paper figurines, I will turn around and leave. You can just find anyone to do your dirty work."
The owner said with a smile: "A paper man is not worth anything, and you still refuse to accept payment. For this matter, you have offended the colleagues who sell paper work. Isn't this inappropriate?"
My father said solemnly: "Which paper seller from all over the country dares to challenge me? I stand at the door of his house and cough, and his paper worker can lift him out and slap his mouth!"
"
"Go and tell the paper seller that I'm the one who takes care of your business. What do you think he will say?"
The boss had no choice but to go find the paper seller. As a result, the paper seller turned against the boss on the spot and said, "Why didn't you tell Mr. Yuan that you were looking for something for nothing?"
He left with the boy he had pierced.
I also asked my father: "Why did that house leave?"
My grandfather told me with a smile: "Our paper figurines are good, but he can't compare to ours, so I'm sorry!"
When my father spoke, he just thought he was fooling the children and didn't take it seriously, but I took it seriously.
I secretly took a look at my father several times, and then I realized that the paper figurine made by him was much taller than the "virgin girl" from that family, and also had several circles of fat.
That paper figurine had a pair of empty eyes and no eyes. My father put toy eyeballs on the paper figurine. If he put the paper figurine there and didn’t look carefully, he would have thought it was a real person.
After I went back, I was thinking, why is my father’s paper man different from other people?
After thinking about it for several days, I couldn't figure out a reason, so I took advantage of my father not being at home to move the paper man out.
