Chapter 9 Dragon Pattern Stone Window
The ground in the cave was left by the stone slab, the pit was bumpy and not flat, the tractor was shaking violently when it was driven on it, and suddenly it jumped. Zhang Guifang leaned against Jin Huabin. Jin Huabin hurriedly reached out to support him, and the two of them were unconsciously leaning together. Although the light was dim, Master Wu had been making a living by making a living by slashing stones in the cave for a long time, and he asked jokingly: "What's the urgent matter for you guys to come here to find the old man?"
Jin Huabin hurriedly let go of Zhang Guifang and said, "We are not young couples." But she tightened to him. In the headlight, Master Wu smiled mysteriously. After a while, he came to the cave to hit the stone.
There are two semi-finished stone windows in the site. The tools for carving stone windows are very simple. A stone hammer, a few steel drills, and rock chisels can be started. However, the process and process of carving stone windows are very complicated, and it requires more than ten processes such as material selection, layout, drawing, rough carving, shallow carving, clearing, fine carving, polishing, waxing, and polishing. One of these two semi-finished products has completed the selection, layout, drawing, rough carving, and shallow carving are being picked in the air, and the other is in the rough carving stage.
"Wow, this vanilla dragon carving is so exquisite." Seeing the semi-finished product, Jin Huabin exclaimed.
"Do you know the name of this dragon?" Master Wu opened his eyes wide and stared at him incredibly. Although he has been engaged in carving for more than 50 years, he mostly staking according to the patterns handed down by the master. He himself only knew the names of the patterns but did not understand the meaning of the carving work.
Because of working in the cultural station, it is also a topic that the webmaster is concerned about, so Jin Huabin had a little bit of this content a few days ago, and Zhang Guifang was on the side, which was a great opportunity. So, he sold the land and showed everyone what he had just learned: "Look at it, the carved things have a head like a dragon, and its body is slender and curled like a vine and grass leaf; some of the dragon's mouth spit out a lotus flower, and some spit out a few strings of pearls. This dragon pattern is called "vanilla dragon". Because the body of this dragon pattern is indeed painted like a beautiful grass leaf. However, the name "vanilla dragon" is only named because of its similar shape, and does not reflect the reason why the dragon pattern is drawn like this. There is also a story about why this dragon is carved into this shape."
He paused for a moment, and saw that the people around him were listening attentively, and said proudly: "Once, Zhiji communicated with Manjushri Bodhisattva on Mount Lingjiu. Manjushri said: I preached the Lotus Sutra in the salt water sea. There was a daughter of a dragon king who was only eight years old, but she had "wisdom and sharp roots". The Buddhist principles were understood at one point, and she realized and became a Buddha in an instant. After becoming a Buddha, she was eloquent and could speak and preach, and she said it in her mind. She was both subtle and vast. Zhiji had some doubts about this and asked: Sakyamuni Buddha had finally become a Buddha after going through hardships of practice. I don't believe that a dragon girl could become a Buddha in an instant. As soon as she finished speaking, the dragon girl suddenly appeared in the Dharma Assembly.
So, how do we specifically express the story of "Dragon Girl Becoming a Buddha" in the stone carvings? First of all, "Dragon Girl" is also a dragon, so we need to draw the characteristics of the dragon. The head and front half of the dragon in porcelain paintings are the places where this characteristic is expressed. Secondly, "Dragon Girl" is a woman, and flowers and plants are most likely to remind people of the softness of women, so the painter paints the dragon body into the shape of flowers and plants. Thirdly, how do we express "becoming a Buddha"? According to the narration of "Devadatta Pin", the dragon girl is "eloquent and unobstructed" and is good at "mind and oral performance" Buddhist scriptures and the stone window indicates that this is a dragon that becomes a Buddha by making lotus and pearls grow from the dragon's mouth. The former is "spraying lotus flowers on the mouth", and the latter is "wonderful words and pearls". Both states are symbols of the exquisite preaching after becoming a Buddha."
"It turns out that there is another saying. Cultural people are cultural people. I have carved dragons for forty years. I only understand the truth in it today." Master Wu suddenly realized: "No wonder Director Zhang wants you to participate in the discussion together." He pointed to another stone window pattern and said: "This time, I received a small order. The doors and windows of the ancestral hall in a village were broken. I asked me to re-carve it. What does this mean?"
This window lattice only reaches the rough carving stage, but the prototype can also be seen. After careful observation, Jin Huabin said, "I don't know if I'm right. This is called Kuilong. In the decoration of bronze ware in the late Shang Dynasty and the Western Zhou Dynasty, the Kuilong pattern is one of the main patterns. The image is mostly long strips with a roll-tail. The appearance is suitable for the structural lines of the bronze ware decorative surface, with straight lines as the main and arcs as the auxiliary, and has an ancient and clumsy beauty. This pattern is available in our history textbooks."
Master Wu ordered to the two apprentices: "I have something to go to the city. You can start the stone slabs as I teach you, and the carving will be paused." After that, he changed his clothes and took a car back to the city together.
In the car, Master Wu sighed: "I'm old, I'm old. I want to find a good apprentice to tell me that I can't find a bowl. Look, the third apprentice now is okay to do rough work. When I get a fine work, my eyes turn white. I have to go on the stage by myself. At such an old age, the stone hammer is getting heavier and he will not be able to swing it in a few years."
Traditional craftsmanship is short of successors, which is the norm in the industry. Stone carvings and other industries that work hard, make less money, and work hard are the same. Studying and going to college is the way out for young people now. Even if they have poor grades, they have limited IQ and no vision, it is difficult to learn the master's craftsmanship.
"Think back then, in the 1970s and 1980s, I had more than 20 apprentices. As long as I shouted, half of the street would be shaken." Master Wu shook his head and said, "In the 1990s, everyone gave up their own business and would rather do rough work of picking bricks. We are fine work. Are you surprised? rough work is more profitable than fine work."
What caused the decline of the stone window industry was essentially the richness of building materials. Cement pouring replaced stone slab carving. A set of molds was easy to make dozens of window lattice sets a day. However, using stone slab carvings only took several days to produce one set. This is a necessity for social development. Master Wu's craftsmanship is indeed great, and the window lattice carvings are exquisite. Although Jin Huabin had some ideas about the product transformation that Zhang Guifang's father was thinking about, he was not at a loss.
As soon as the car stopped in the workshop under the big camphor tree, Master Wu shouted loudly: "Brother Zhang, I have seen it today." While saying that, he pointed to the dragon carved on the tombstone and said: "This vanilla dragon has such a nice allusion. I have carved stone windows all my life. After all, there are dozens of fans of this dragon. I have never heard of it."
After saying that, he repeated the story of the vanilla dragon as a dragon girl becoming a Buddha, patted Jin Huabin on the shoulder and said, "Brother, this son-in-law has been looking for the right one, awesome!"
It's only been a week since I went on a blind date, but I became a son-in-law? These words made the two of them blush, but their hearts were sweet.
