Chapter 375: The Fall of the Merchant City

On September 27, 1788, when people in the Irkutsk City Council had just learned of the capture of Ukhnudinsk, the Northern Navy's fleet crossed Lake Baikal and sailed into the Angara River.

Not to mention that the seals in the lake were frightened by the motors of the North Navy fleet and ran away with their heads. The uninformed citizens of Irkutsk soon discovered this strange fleet, and they gathered on the river bank to watch. The North Navy patrol boat responsible for the pioneering path saw a sloop with a double-headed eagle flag sailing out of the dock and coming towards him, and asked Zhao Xin how to deal with it.

"Let's fire! Sink it!"

With the deafening "bang bang" sound, the onlookers of Irkutsk saw the three soldiers and an officer on the sailboat suddenly explode like broken watermelons, and the broken limbs fell into the river with blood rain, and then a fire broke out on the wooden boat.

The city has been developing from a winter hut for more than 120 years and has never been invaded by foreign enemies. They seem to have forgotten that in the spring, there were troops and fleets to attack China; later when Suvorov initiated a conscription order, someone enthusiastically signed up, hoping to get a vote in China.

Now the revenge of the Chinese is coming!

Under the blockade of 50-heavy machine guns on the patrol boat, it was difficult for the local defenders who were in a hurry to approach the dock, and even if someone wanted to move cannons, it was too late.

As the North Navy began to land, dense bombs and grenades exploded the fish market near the docks. The fish and shrimp that had no time to clean up flew everywhere with the explosion of the grenades. Cats and dogs that could only shake their tails and beg for food were in their hands and unexpected harvests disappeared in a blink of an eye. Cossack soldiers who came from the castle were either knocked into holes all over the body by bullets, or died in the explosion of the grenades.

As the bells of the churches in the city rang rapidly, the residents of Irkutsk who did not have time to clean up their belongings and ran into the Kremlin to hide.

The local Kremlin is a fortress with mixed wood and stone. Inside, except for a masonry and stone church, the rest are all wooden buildings. Fortunately, the exterior wall is built with mixed brick and stone, which is slightly dilapidated.

From a plane, the Kremlin in Irkutsk is a square with a side length of 130 meters and a wall height of 7 meters. It has eight towers; it is adjacent to the Angara River, 20 meters high, three on the mountain side, 17 meters high, and one in the center of the east and west city walls.

In fact, if the Northern Navy hadn't suddenly attacked, the fortress had almost no military significance; a fire thirteen years ago almost completely destroyed the city center, and the local city council had decided to demolish the fortress. Such administrative buildings, customs buildings, barracks and gunpowder depots were all outside the castle.

When the wealthy merchants and city councillors learned of the invasion of the foreign land, they ran to the three-storey building on the Angara River embankment and hid in a solid building built with white stones. This is the local administrative building, which has been preserved to the modern era in another time and space, and is known as the "White House" in Irkutsk.

Zhao Xin was not in a hurry to attack the city. He wanted to exhaust Irkutsk's resistance. So the Northern Navy leisurely built fortifications on the open space next to the fish market, waiting for the city to organize armed resistance.

"Mihailovich, what should we do?"

Facing the inquiry from the Councillor Basinen, Mayor Siberyakov asked an officer who ran back from the fish market: "Major Gregory, how many of them are there?"

The major replied: "Your Excellency, there are only a few hundred enemies, but their weapons are too powerful, so we cannot get close to each other and we suffer heavy casualties."

"Catch them back!"

"Destroy them!"

Siberyakov slapped the table and shouted: "They destroyed my fish market! Immediately call on all the adult men in the city to open the gunpowder depot! I want them to taste the awesomeness!"

The reason why this mayor is that he has a strong fist except for being rich is that no one in the city dares to mess with him. His favorite thing to do is to get in a carriage and turn around the city. As long as he notices someone's dispute or other troubles, Sibiryakov will immediately jump out of the car and rush in and beat the guy he thinks is guilty until the other party bows his head and admits his mistake.

At this time, the bishop of the Savior Church who rushed over to hear the news dissuaded: "Mayor, we should send someone to talk to the robbers and figure out what they want to do. After all, we don't even know who they are and where they come from!"

Siberiakov nodded and said, "You are right, so how can you, the respected bishop, communicate with those people?"

At this time, the local great merchant and councillor Basin said: "I am willing to accompany the Bishop."

Major Gregory said: "I'll go too, just get to know the other party's strength."

Two hours later, the three people with a look of dirt returned to the administrative building, and the news they sent back surprised everyone at home.

"What? You said they are Chinese?"

"Oh my God, God bless you! The Governor was also captured by them?"

"Yes, Count Jacques cut off one hand by them."

"These devils!"

"How much does it cost to redeem the city?"

Basin poured himself a glass of wine and drank it all, then continued: "Gentlemen, the Chinese are not only here to take revenge, they are trying to occupy this place and turn it into their territory!"

What?! Everyone in the house was stunned. Occupy? In the future, each of us will shave a bald man like the Qing people, and then put a rat tail on the back of our heads?

Chinese people do not believe in Christ. What should we do in the future if our church is changed? Will we change the Lama Temple? God, this is too bad!

Seeing the house becoming as noisy as the vegetable market, Mayor Siberyakov's big fist slammed the table several times and shouted: "Shut up! Listen to him after he finished speaking! If anyone makes a noise again, I will let him get out!"

Basinen showed a confused look at this time and said to everyone: "Major Gregory's judgment is correct, and there are not many Chinese people coming. However, we carefully observed their soldiers. They did not comb their braids, but had their short hair."

The bishop added at this time: "They said they were from Seris and descendants of the Ming Empire two hundred years ago."

Member Dudorowski, who was present, suddenly said: "His bishop, what are you talking about? What is Seris, from the Ming Empire?"

The bishop quickly explained: "Gentlemen, Cyrius is in Latin, which was the name of that country in ancient Rome."

Hi, isn’t that still China?

Although the MPs present were all wealthy businessmen, these guys were all fighting for their family business under the cruel natural conditions of East and West Siberia. Although they all dressed like people pretending to be nobles, they really didn't have much knowledge, and they were very good at killing and setting fire.

Siberiakov sneered at this time: "No matter what Seris or pigtails he is, this is our city! Hundreds of people want us to surrender, what a joke!"

"You're right! Kill those Chinese!"

"That's right, let Her Majesty see, we are not just able to pay taxes, we can still defend the city!"

"But Mikhailovic, they even gave Suvorov..."

Siberyakov interrupted Basining and said with a serious look: "Basining, you let the Chinese deceive you! Who is Suvorov? A general who wins every battle! How could a genius who even the Turks cannot win, let the Chinese be captured?"

The mayor's words received a response from most people in the house, and those people expressed their desire to fight with the Chinese and kill them all.

The next step is simple. Some people from each family contributed their strength. Hundreds of local Cossack garrisons and civilians formed a team of 2,000 people, and handed over to Major Gregorian to lead.

Then, there is nothing!

By the way, if the infantry did not line up in battles in these days, they would not have fought at all. So when the two thousand Irkutsk were lined up in an inconsistent queue, they came to the North Navy position with great momentum, and were soon baptized by gunfire.

Within twenty minutes of the fire exchange between the two sides, the Irkutsk defenders lost hundreds of people. Faced with the "overwhelming" artillery fire of the Chinese, many people who had never fought a war were scared and turned around and fled back to the Kremlin castle.

Late at night that day, the Russians organized another sneak attack. However, Zhao Xin was prepared for it. The 18-bead LED strong light flashlight that once showed its might outside Guangzhou came in handy. Faced with the strong lights shot out of the North Navy fortifications, half of Irkutsk was illuminated as bright as daytime, and the Russians who attacked were almost blinded. Then, hundreds of black muzzles began to eject dense bullets, wantonly harvesting the lives of the sneak attackers.

When the terrified sneak attackers fled back to the castle, they found that two-thirds of their manpower had been lost. Now no matter how the men promised, no one would go out.

This is not a war, it is simply a massacre! There is no chance to fight the enemy, and those Chinese are just a group of devils!

In fact, what is even more frightening is still to come.

Starting from September 28, the Northern Navy set up artillery positions behind the fortifications, and used a "cannon group" composed of two D30 and ten 82 mortars to bomb the Kremlin, barracks, customs and other key points.

Six towers of the Kremlin Fortress were blown up, and the remaining two were shaking; all the houses in the barracks were blown up, and the gunpowder depot was detonated, and the flesh and blood that were blown up flew into the air a hundred meters high with countless gravels; hundreds of shops and houses turned into ashes in the artillery fire, and thousands of people were homeless.

Is war? That's it? Tsarist Russia can go to Heilongjiang to burn, kill and loot, and the Chinese can also let the war ignite their homes.

On September 30, after two consecutive days of saturated shelling, Mayor Siberyakov and a group of lawmakers supporting the resistance saw the scarred city becoming shattered, and years of hard work were about to be destroyed. Finally, the white flag was raised and agreed to surrender unconditionally.

Under the complex and unspeakable gaze of a group of city councillors and local bishops, Zhao Xin pinched a small piece of bread from the silver tray held by Siberiakov, dipped it in the salty salt in the silver bowl, put it in his mouth, and nodded.

Seeing that the Chinese adult opposite had accepted his surrender, the hung hearts of the merchants finally let go.

"One is connected to the customs building, two is connected to the barracks and gunpowder depots, three is connected to the Kremlin, and the guard company follows me into the Sibericov Palace!"

With Zhao Xin's order, various heads of the North Navy launched an action. As the city council had notified in advance, thousands of local residents were ordered to return home and not go out. Those whose houses had been destroyed by the war could only temporarily live in churches. They watched through the cracks and windows of the doors and windows as teams of fully armed oriental people wearing steel helmets ran across the street and began to take over the entire city.

The weather is about to change! Many people think so. But what they are most worried about is what the city will become after the Chinese come. Will they drive themselves away? If they leave, where can they go?

When Zhao Xin took the guard company and led by a member of the congressman and businessman to the gate of the White House, he felt so happy when he saw the exterior walls blackened by artillery fire and the large pits bombed by artillery shells!

During the subsequent meeting with local officials in Irkutsk, Zhao Xin accidentally discovered a customs official named Peter Markovic Rotionov. He lived in Beijing for eleven years with the Sixth Orthodox Missionary Missionary. Three years ago, he was sent to the Tsarist Russian Foreign Affairs Commission to be responsible for the trade work of the Qing Dynasty. However, because Ivan Jakarbi was unwilling to resume the Chaktu trade, he had to stay at the customs to do some sorting of documents and archives.

This chapter is not over, please click on the next page to continue reading! Although Markovic has been away from China for many years, his oral language has not been forgotten. After sincere friendship and communication with coercion and temptation, Zhao Xin learned that although the local area is directly under the jurisdiction of the Tsarist areas, it has actually been controlled by merchants.

Starting from 1762, when Katerina II abolished the official monopoly policy of fur exports, the five major families of Siberiakov, Milinkov, Basin, Dudorovsky and Suredovs controlled various trades in Irkut. In addition to participating in the trade in Chaktu, they also monopolized the production and supply of wine, salt, bread, and mineral transactions in East Siberia.

The number of people engaged in business in Irkutsk accounts for 52% of the total population, and the rest are craftsmen, clerks and hired workers. In addition, there are many exiled serfs from Yenisei Province who grow cereals, hops and beets outside the city.

The city council consists of five major merchant families and other medium-sized merchants has become the dominant force in urban social life, and even Ivan Jacques cannot get involved. These people not only gained huge commercial benefits through collusion between officials and businessmen, but also exploited the civilians who were exiled here.

The tentacles of the five major commercial families are all over the city, churches, shelters, hospitals, schools, theaters and libraries, and even many streets in the city are named after them.

Speaking of which, with the Agricultural Products Expo held in 1768, Irkutsk became the main commodity distribution center in the entire East and West Siberia region. By 1787, the transaction volume of commodities reached 3.7 million rubles, accounting for almost 6% of the total Russian commodity trade. This can be regarded as a distribution center for East and West trade in Tsarist Russia, and wine and luxury goods from France can even be bought locally. However, with the suspension of the Chaktu trade three years ago, the trade impact on tea, silk fabrics, fur and rhubarb was extremely severe.

After listening to Markovic's introduction, Zhao Xin couldn't help but think of a certain nation. So when he asked Peter, it turns out that three of the five major families were Jewish.

Zhao Xin first appointed Peter Markovic Rotionov as the local liaison officer for the Northern Navy, responsible for drafting the Northern Navy's decrees in Russian and conveying them among local residents.

Although Markovic strongly refused, after Zhao Xin exiled his whole family to the lower reaches of Heilongjiang when he expressed his disagreement, the cowardly civil servant who scolded Zhao Xin as a "devil" in his heart had to express his willingness to serve.

Afterwards, Zhao Xin ordered Markovic to find the heads of five major families, including Mayor Siberiakov. He dispelled half of these people's hatred in just one sentence.

"I have a huge amount of silk, rhubarb and tea, who do you want?"

The fool doesn't want it! The five major families were silent for a moment, and the mayor Siberiakov said: "What tea?"
