Chapter 7: Broken Hope

Early the next morning, a boy appeared in the "Magic Zoo" store in Diagon Alley.

His eyes were red and his face was exhausted. He looked like he hadn't had a good sleep last night; especially with a dead toad in his hand, which looked very funny.

This boy is Matthew Wakefield.

His fatigue was normal, because he didn't close his eyes all night last night.

This is not surprising. After experiencing such a terrible incident, few people were probably able to fall asleep. All night, he was thinking whether he would die suddenly on the bed like the poor toad, and then the strange book appeared under him.

Fortunately, such a bad situation did not happen, and he was still alive until the next morning.

The strange book still stayed quietly in the glass box, motionless.

Matthew didn't dare to touch it on his own initiative. He just snatched the dead toad from the glass box and ran to Diagon Alley.

...

"You mean, did this little guy die suddenly?"

The owner of the "Wonderful Zoo", the witch wearing heavy glasses, took the toad body in Matthew's hand in a bit incredible way.

"What's going on? You have to know that the toad's vitality is very tenacious." She murmured.

Matthew spread his hands: "Madam, I also want to know what happened."

"Wait for a moment!"

The witch said, pulling out the wand from her waist and waved it gently.

A magnifying glass flew out of somewhere in the store and flew into her hands. She sat down at the wooden table next to her, put the dead toad in front of him, then raised the magnifying glass and began to observe carefully.

Matthew could only wait aside.

While waiting, he was also carefully observing the witch's expression... At first she was always calm, but it seemed that after seeing something, a terrified expression appeared on her face.

"What's wrong, madam?" he asked softly.

"No... nothing..." The witch shook her head suddenly, and her horrified face quickly turned into an incredible look: "This is impossible..."

Matthew bit his lip, and he made his tone casually as much as possible: "Is the cause of the toad's death strange?"

"This poor little guy seems to be scared to death..." The witch said inconsistently: "This is impossible... it won't be like that... it's just a toad, no one will do that to it..."

She stood up tremblingly and threw the body of the black-cornered toad into the trash can without hesitation.

Her voice gradually calmed down: "I will compensate for this, sir, you can choose another toad in the store."

Even though her condition is still very wrong.

When she reached into the cage to catch the toad, she didn't catch it firmly for a while and almost fell into the cage; while writing the transaction records, she broke two quills in a row; and when Matthew took the new toad, she accidentally kicked over a kettle on the ground...

In short, when he sent Matthew away from her shop like a plague god, the witch wearing heavy glasses breathed a sigh of relief as if she had taken off her heavy burden.

...

Matthew Wakefield saw everything about the witch's performance.

The worries and doubts in my heart have become deeper.

But he didn't dare to continue to stimulate her. After all, although the other party seemed to be out of control, he was a real adult witch... He was a minor who knew nothing about magic. If she didn't want to say it, it would be almost impossible for him to ask anything.

Holding the new toad he just obtained in his hand, he came to his next destination:

Lihen Bookstore.

The clerks at Lihen Bookstore do not seem to remember that the boy had been here once yesterday and still received him with a smile on his face.

Matthew was wandering around the bookstore while thinking about the language, and he didn't dare to ask directly about the book.

After walking around for about three or five minutes, Matthew slowly approached a clerk with no one around:

"Are there any old books here that are older... ancient books..." he asked softly.

"No!" the clerk replied without even raising his head.

"Really?"

When Matthew saw the other party raise his head, he quickly added: "A friend of mine told me that he had found an old book page with yellowed pages in the Hogwarts book box that your bookstore had given him before..."

"He is lying!" said the clerk without hesitation, with a very cold expression on his face: "It is impossible for Hogwarts' bookcase to have something that does not belong to it; and Lihen Bookstore only sells new books. If you want to find that kind of old antique, you should go to the library!"

"But..." Matthew wanted to say something else.

"If you are coming to chat with someone instead of buying books, please get out!" The clerk said impatiently: "I can give you some small help!"

He stood up and pulled out a magic wand from his waist at the same time—

Before Matthew could react, he was pushed out of the bookstore by an invisible force, unable to control his actions at all... The boy was easily pushed out of the Lihen Bookstore, and then fell heavily on the pebbles floor of Diagon Alley.

Several wizards in black robes hurried past him, no one paid any attention to him.

Matthew got up from the ground in a little embarrassedly and patted the dust on his body.

It seems that I can't ask about the origin of the book... I read the signs of Lihen Bookstore in the end, and he thought to myself.

However, although the clerk just now had a rough attitude and movements, what he said, if he thought about it carefully, it didn't seem like a fake...

So, how did that book come about?

...

Matthew returned to the entrance of Diagon Alley in shame.

He had no wand, so he couldn't pass here... he could only wait for a wizard to pass by as he came, and then followed him in.

His mood was a little heavy, and the strange book was pressing against his heart like a mountain.

What should I do?

The only way to think of now is to wait until Hogwarts and hand over the book of unknown origin to Albus Dumbledore. With Professor Dumbledore's insight, he might be able to come up with a solution, and maybe he could help himself get out of the predicament...

Suddenly, Matthew was stunned.

In such a world, will Albus Dumbledore still be the principal of Hogwarts?

I'm afraid it won't be...

As the hope was shattered, he smiled miserably, and then walked to Room 13 of the Broken Cauldron Bar.
