Chapter 6 The struggle between Buddhism and Taoism

Zou Jing hired a few porters to teach them to send the purchased oil, rice, tea and salt to Hengshan Jianshe Villa, and he and Hu Qingpeng sent Fang Yuxuan and his wife to Yehou Academy.

He was extremely powerful, and he was still walking steadily in his hands, neither blushed nor breathing, which made the Fang couple amazed.

Fang Yuxuan and his wife came to Hengshan for the first time. They walked up the mountain road. They stopped to enjoy each place of famous scenic spots and historical sites, especially when they saw the stone carvings of poems and stones left by their predecessors, they must copy them. They walked and stopped and finally came outside the gate of Yehou Academy. The academy was solemn and simple, quiet and deep, and there were two couplets engraved outside the door: "Thirty thousand scrolls are left, and I went into the room to pursue the famous prime minister; the nine thousand feet of clouds and mountains remained unchanged, and I carefully recognized the ancient mist and clouds on the railings."

Before leaving, Fang Yuxuan held Hu Qingpeng's hand and said, "Brother Hu, if it weren't for you today, we, the couple, would have been unable to escape. The ancients said, 'A little bit of kindness should be repaid with a spring'. I really don't know how to thank you. If you have free time in the future, welcome you to the academy to find me, and we will definitely treat you sincerely!"

Hu Qingpeng thought about it and said embarrassedly: "Mr. Fang, I have a request or not?"

Fang Yuxuan smiled and said, "You are my benefactor, what else can you be polite? It's okay to just say it!"

Hu Qingpeng said: "Can you borrow two books for me to read?" His eyes ejaculated with eager expectations. After he came to Hengshan, he never touched books again, and he had no money to buy books, but his hope of seeking knowledge has never faded. He just saw that there were many famous works in Fang Yuxuan's box, and he couldn't help but borrow them.

Without saying a word, Fang Yuxuan immediately picked a book called "The Analects of Confucius" and handed it to him, and stated that Hu Qingpeng could exchange it for other books after reading it, and that if there were any things he didn't understand, he could raise it at any time, and he would be responsible for answering it. Hu Qingpeng was overjoyed and thanked him, and was extremely happy in his heart. Since Guo Jingzhi, he finally found another wise master.

Farewell to the Fang couple, Hu Qingpeng and Zou Jing, along the mountain road, turned west at the pavilion in the Mid-mountain pavilion, and returned to Hengshan Jiansai Villa under Huagai Peak. This road is not the main line for exploring the beautiful scenery of Hengshan, so the number of tourists has decreased significantly. The trees are green, the winding paths are secluded, the monkeys fly, and the birds circulate. The clean water flows from time to time are like shining ribbons.

After walking for a while, Zou Jing frowned slightly, suddenly stopped, and grabbed Hu Qingpeng. Hu Qingpeng asked for no reason, "Entertainment Father, what's wrong?" Zou Jing whispered: "It seems something is wrong! Have you noticed that there are only two of us on this road, which is very common!"

As soon as he finished speaking, a harsh laughter sounded like a night owl. Two great men came towards us with great power. One of them was the gangster who was beaten up in the ancient town. His nose was bruised and his eyes were almost spitting out of fire. He pointed at Hu and Zou and the other two shouted: "Cousin, it was these two bastards with no eyes that beat us four brothers. You have to make the decision for us!" He was ridiculous with the power of a dog, and the fox pretended to be a tiger.

The other man was thin, his eyes were cold and vicious, and his temples were slightly raised. He was so imposing as he walked. There was a whip wrapped around his waist, as if he was a man in the martial arts world. He snorted with his nose, slapped the gangster casually, and cursed: "What did you grow up with? You can't even deal with a little ghost or a rash man? The dog I raised is better than you!" The gangster dared not retort and lowered his head in shame.

After scolding his companion, the man turned his eyes and looked at Hu and Zou coldly, and said ruthlessly: "You are very brave, you dare to hit me! As long as you cut off your own arms, the account will be cancelled today, otherwise you will be unable to afford it!"

Hu Qingpeng saw the other party's posture and knew that this person had martial arts. It seemed that he had stabbed the hornet's nest this time. He clasped his fists according to the rules of the world and said, "I am Hu Qingpeng, a disciple of Hengshan Sword Sect. May I ask you the name of your honor? Are you in Hengshan? Are you afraid that the elders of my master will start a sect and ask for punishment?"

The man's expression changed several times, and his eyes suddenly shot out murderous aura, "It turns out that he is a high-ranking master of Hengshan Sect. No wonder he wants to do stupid things like a chivalrous and righteous person! I don't change my surname or a name, but I am Deng Dingnan, the deputy leader of the Hengyang Branch of the World Association. I originally wanted to stop the blood when I saw it, but now I have changed my mind! To be honest, our World Association does not want to be enemies with the Seven Sword Sects, so I have to let you shut up forever and bury your bones in the wilderness!" He happened to go back to his hometown to visit relatives these days. Seeing that his cousin was beaten, he wanted to come forward to find the place. But he knew that the other party was actually a disciple of the Hengshan Sword Sect. He had always been ruthless and decided to kill someone to silence him, and then throw the body under the cliff, without knowing it.

Hu Qingpeng had only been practicing martial arts for a year and knew that he was not the opponent's opponent. He drew out half a cut-off sword and said anxiously: "Entertainment Father, go back and bring reinforcements, I'll block him!" Zou Jing glared at him, strode forward, and shouted majestic: "What is the world? It's the strongest part of my Hengshan Sect above Hengshan Sect! If you are smart, hurry up and slip away with your tail, otherwise I will punch your dog's head!"

Deng Dingnan didn't know where he came from. He was bare-handed and did not have a long sword. He was with Hengshan disciples. How could he guess that Zou Jing was just a servant in Hengshan Sword Sect who cooked vegetables and chopped wood? Seeing that the opponent was amazing, he couldn't help but be cautious and sneered: "If you insult me, you must die!" After that, he jumped forward and used the "wild horse mane" move with both palms. The tips of his palms merged like a knife to attack the opponent's mid-square plate. His move only used six success powers, which was purely a throwing stone to ask for directions.

Zou Jing smiled proudly, and was about to pull the boxing toward the opponent's flaw. His ears suddenly thrust, and the condensed momentum suddenly relaxed. When the iron fist was punched out, he seemed a little clumsy. Deng Dingnan laughed silently. Although the opponent's fist was strong, he did not have any internal strength, so how could he hurt himself? Moreover, his fist path was full of flaws, and he was clearly a person who did not understand martial arts. He slipped his steps, avoided the iron fist, flipped his left palm, and hit Zou Jing's chest.

Zou Jing spit out a mouthful of blood, and took several steps in a row, his face turned pale. Hu Qingpeng shouted "Entertainment Father" and jumped in front of him with a sword to block Deng Dingnan.

Deng Dingnan laughed wildly and said, "You ignorant child who is not dry, do you want to block me too? I will send you to see the King of Hell!" The left palm faded, which attracted Hu Qingpeng to swing his sword to block it, and his right palm quickly strode forward, aiming at his face and hit him.

The palm wind hit him, and Hu Qingpeng was unable to resist, so he could only close his eyes and wait for death. At the critical moment, a slight sound was heard, Deng Dingnan closed his palm and cried in pain, and took a few steps back. Hu Qingpeng opened his eyes and saw a green pine needle inserted in his right palm, which penetrated straight into the back of his palm, and blood dripped down the pine needle. Hu Qingpeng couldn't believe his eyes. The ordinary pine needle broke and was actually shot through Deng Dingnan's palm by someone as a hidden weapon! Even the leader probably did not have such deep skills. So who saved him?

Deng Dingnan's face was distorted in pain, and he glanced at the surrounding trees in horror, and said loudly: "I don't know who is the senior who came forward to build a beam. Do you think you will be enemies with the world?" The surroundings were quiet, and only the sound of apes and birds singing were heard.

Deng Dingnan knew that there must be a master lurking in the forest, but he just didn't want to show up. It would be difficult for him to kill someone to silence him! The hidden weapon that he showed was shocking, as if it was a legendary peerless technique of "flying flowers hurt the enemy", and he could not stand it. He stomped his feet hatefully and left without saying a word. The gangster shouted in panic: "Cousin, wait for me, don't leave me alone!" He rolled over and crawled over.

Seeing the strong enemy retreating, Hu Qingpeng came to his senses, grabbed Zou Jing's arm with concern, and asked, "Entertainment Father, have you suffered internal injuries?"

Zou Jing's face had recovered as usual, and he smiled and said, "I'm covered in copper and iron bones, as strong as a bear. I was just touched by a dog's paws. How could I get easily injured? It seems that a paradise saved your life. You should thank him."

Hu Qingpeng remembered the escaping from death just now, and couldn't help but feel a little scared. If Deng Dingnan's palm really hit him, it would be hard to die. He said loudly: "Hu Qingpeng, a disciple of Hengshan, thanks for his great kindness for helping me!" He said that, and knelt down and bowed to the sky. As soon as he bent down, he heard a gust of wind passing by, followed by the collar of the back neck tightening, and his whole body was lifted in the air, shuttled and flew across the treetops, and in a blink of an eye, Zou Jing could no longer be seen.

Hu Qingpeng was shocked and struggled instinctively. The person who grabbed him smiled and said, "If you move around, if you fall off the cliff and fall into a meat paste, it has nothing to do with me." Hu Qingpeng saw the scenery around him suddenly change, and the cold wind blew his face, as if it was flying clouds and fog, flying and jumping on the cliffs. Below was a valley with strange rocks, which was so scared that he was sweating wildly, and obediently at the mercy of others.

The man was very good at lightness. Even though he was holding a person in his hand, he was still walking on the ground on the pine wood in the dangerous cliff, and his body was not forced at all. Hu Qingpeng was a person who knew the goods. He admired him so much that his fear gradually faded away. He was secretly wondering why he wanted to hijack him? After thinking about it, he really didn't have any outstanding places, nor did he have any rare treasures in his body. He was so ordinary that he would not attract attention. This person's actions were really puzzling.

The man took Hu Qingpeng to a rarely visited mountain. There was a platform over twenty feet above the peak, surrounded by clouds and mist, just enough to isolate the gaze from the distance. He put Hu Qingpeng on the ground and smiled and said, "Little baby, do you still remember me?"

Hu Qingpeng was shocked and saw that the man was shiny and covered in fat, covered in old gray robes, and a string of nine fists-sized rosary hanging on his chest. His face was like the Maitreya Buddha worshipped in the temple. A flash of inspiration appeared in his mind and he shouted: "You are Master Mingxin who guards the Nanyue Temple!" When he first arrived in Hengshan, he broke into the Nanyue Temple with Mo Tianfeng at night, but was driven out by Master Tianfa and the Master Mingxin in front of him, which impressed him.

Master Mingxin nodded and smiled, "The little baby has a good memory! After not seeing you for a year, your foundation has been very solid. It seems that you have worked hard."

Hu Qingpeng asked, "I wonder if the master saved me just now?"

Master Mingxin yawned, sat down on the ground, waved his hand and said, "This is just a trivial matter. Don't thank you all the time. I hate these red tape the most!"

Hu Qingpeng was not surprised, so he changed his question and asked: "Why did the master bring me here?" This place was isolated from clouds and mist. He could not see the beautiful scenery of Nanyue, but it was also very desolate. There were only piles of strange-shaped stones, and not even a single wild grass.

Master Mingxin blinked mysteriously and said, "I asked you to be arbitration!"

Hu Qingpeng was confused: "Arbitration? Me?"

Master Mingxin said: "Do you still remember the old Taoist priest of the Heavenly Law? We made an appointment to duel here, and there is just one notary who will determine the winner and lose. It is the most appropriate for you to do it!"

It turns out that Nanyue is a Buddhist resort and a famous Taoist mountain. The dispute over Buddhism and Taoism has been long. During the Southern Dynasties, Huisi, a monk from the second ancestor of Tiantai Sect, came to Nanyue to set up a religion, and the Prajna Temple he founded was the ancestral home of Tiantai Sect. Later, during the Kaiyuan period of the Tang Dynasty, Zen Master Huairang preached Zen at the Prajna Temple and founded the Nanyue Zen system. The most outstanding disciple under his disciple was Master Mazu Daoyi. After Mazu learned the Dharma from Zen Master Huairang, he soon created a jungle system, which influenced the temples in the world and caused the phenomenon of no temples without Zen. Nanyue Zen Buddhism was promoted by disciples in the generations and developed into the Weiyang Sect, Linji Sect, Caodong Sect, Yunmen Sect, and Fayan Sect. By the Ming Dynasty, believers were spread all over the world and were the most respected branch of Middle-earth Buddhism.

Taoism also started from the Southern and Northern Dynasties, and all the famous people practiced Taoism and cultivated their nature in Nanyue, such as Yin Daoquan and Shi Cun. There was a Huangting Temple on the mountain to offer Wei Huacun. According to legend, the "Huangting Jing" was obtained by him. When Tao Hongjing, the "Prime Minister in the Mountain", founded the Maoshan School of Taoism, he respected Wei Huacun as the first generation master. The Yue God worshipped in the Nanyue Temple today is the Emperor of Nanyue, who is responsible for the separation of stars and is also a god in Taoism.

As the saying goes, "One mountain does not accommodate two tigers." Although Buddhism and Taoism are monks and are not in conflict with things, they are in the Nanyue Mountains, and there are some disputes and struggles openly and secretly, until they are in trouble. Later, in order to calm the affairs and show that the equality of Buddhism and Taoism coexist, the court simply built eight Taoist temples on both sides of the Nanyue Temple, and sent Taoist priests and monks to the temple to lead the affairs. The courts of all dynasties either respected or admired Taoism, but basically recognized the fact that Nanyue Buddha and Taoism were united, and they were usually rewarded separately to show the royal demeanor of accepting all rivers. Only under the pressure of the court can the Buddha and Taoism be peacefully coexist and be at peace for many years.

Hu Qingpeng heard Master Mingxin tell the story in a casual way, and said in confusion: "Since Buddhism and Taoism are established together, and the two families are worshipped by believers, why should the master fight with Taoist Master Tianfa in private? Isn't this hurting the harmony between the two families and restarting the trouble?"

Master Mingxin said: "You don't know anything about this! In order to protect the Nanyue Temple from the invasion of the slut, the Buddha and Taoist families will select a Dharma protector to enter the temple every twenty years. The Dharma protectors of this generation are me and the Pharaoh that day! Since everyone is a Dharma protector and each has unique skills, they are inevitably involved in daily discussions. It depends on whether he is a great Taoist martial arts or my Buddhist martial arts master."

Hu Qingpeng understood as soon as he heard this. Although the government prohibited the struggle between Buddha and Taoist families, he secretly used the Dharma protectors to compete with each other. Therefore, he could not help but understand his mind and the law of heaven. He asked curiously: "Who has higher martial arts skills than the master and the Taoist master?"

Master Mingxin showed a strange expression on his face, and he was immersed in the past for a while. After a long time, he exhaled: "We have been fighting for 19 years and come here to duel every year, but never decide the winner and the winner is always tied."

Hu Qingpeng said in surprise: "Nineteen years? That means that this year is your last duel?" The rotation of Dharma protectors every twenty years means that Mingxin and Tianfa's term of office will be over.

Master Mingxin nodded and said, "That's right! We must decide the final duel, otherwise there will be no chance to compete again. Because of this, I made an exception and brought you more often as arbitration. I am afraid that the Taoist priest of Heavenly Fa will be owed if he loses, and he will never admit it." He was going to pass by Magu Bridge in this duel, and happened to see Deng Dingnan performing his crime, so he saved Hu Qingpeng.

"Monkey Mingxin, what are you saying bad things behind me?" The voice was still dozens of feet away. As soon as the words were finished, the person was close to him. In the clouds and mist, a figure fell down like a big bird, with a graceful and elegant posture. The person was wearing a high crown on his head, three black beards under his jaw, his skin was as white as jade, his bones were clear, and a long sword was inserted behind him. His wide sleeves were blown by the mountain wind, floating like an immortal. He was the Taoist Taoist Master Tianfa, a Taoist disciple of Taoism.

Master Mingxin was still sitting on the ground and laughed and said, "Heavenly Law, you finally came! I thought you knew you would lose, so I ran away in the face of battle!"

Taoist Master Tianfa was so angry that he blew his beard and glared: "We have been fighting for so many years. How can you take advantage of it? I think you are not confident, so I hope I will be absent automatically!"

Master Mingxin smiled and said, "We have been fighting for so many years, but it is still difficult to distinguish between the superiority and inferiority. This is Hu Qingpeng, a disciple of Hengshan Sword Sect. I asked him to do arbitration. Do you think it is appropriate?" In fact, he had another reason not to say it, that is, Hu Qingpeng's martial arts skills are too low, and he could not learn any unique tricks when watching the battle.

Hu Qingpeng hurriedly bowed to Taoist Master Tianfa.

Taoist Master Tianfa glanced at him and smiled indifferently, "You are the little baby who broke into Yue Temple a year ago, right? Is your uncle good?"

Hu Qingpeng said respectfully: "After Master Laid, my uncle is not practicing in the mountains. I haven't contacted him for a long time and I don't know his current situation."

Master Tianfa ignored him anymore, looked at Master Mingxin and said bluntly: "You are invited to arbitration this time, will you decide the outcome?"

Master Mingxin said: "We have been fighting between you and me for twenty years. Shouldn't we make a break?"

The Taoist Tianfa sighed: "Twenty years have passed in a blink of an eye, and it's time to break it!"
