Chapter 1372 1372 Role Components

The script of "Independence Day" has been criticized by many people because under the magnificent story framework, Roland Emmerich was too greedy to show the grandeur of the story with the appearance of sentient beings, but it led to too many faces. Each line is simply described, but not deeply portrayed, causing the characters to be superficial, simply masked, and the story becomes bloated.

In the story of "Independence Day", the real protagonist should be the war scene. The magnificent war scenes almost take away all the attention. Relatively speaking, there are three characters who can be called the main character: Bill Pullman's US President, Will Smith's soldier Steven, and Jeff Goblenren's scientist David.

The weight of these three characters is almost equal. Strictly speaking, Bill's role as a US president is slightly more serious. He not only portrays family warmth, but also his personal background and experience, and the overall is relatively complete. On the other hand, although Steven and David have arranged the love line and simply portrayed it, they are all too simple and the completeness is inferior to the US president's line.

The reason for this situation is actually very simple. In the "Independence Day" version of the cast, none of them are really big names. Although Bill has been famous for a long time, he can never be considered a front-line; Jeff can be regarded as a backbone actor and has performed well in many blockbusters, but his personal single-handed starring works are not good; Will has just transformed from a TV actor to a movie actor, and his previous debut "Jedi Men" performed well, but he can only be regarded as a newcomer to a movie.

It is precisely because of this situation that the main scenes are almost divided in the script, and these three actors share them together to support the entire movie.

Originally, the protagonists of the movie were special effects and war. The scenes were divided equally by three people, giving the three actors almost zero performance space. One of the many parts that were criticized by many people at the time of Independence Day was actually the performances of the three leading actors without any highlights, not only on the surface, but also pale and powerless. Although Will was placed first on the poster and the list of actors, in fact, he was not the real protagonist, whether it was the appearance time, the importance of the role, or the weight of the plot.

Hugo's impression of "Independence Day" was all about those spectacular special effects, but he forgot this.

"You know Rick. He is interested in this work. He hopes to make you take on a commercial blockbuster for the first time and create a momentum that matches your value." Joseph spread his hands and said helplessly, and his eyebrows seemed a little disappointed. "Twentieth Century Fox has planned for so long. They have started to design and produce behind-the-scenes special effects in April, but in the end, they came up with such a plan. Your character can only be considered one of the three male protagonists at most, and it is not the most, which is a shame for us. Rick directly rejected Kevin's proposal during the meeting today, without leaving any face for them."

Joseph was also gloating when he talked about it. Once upon a time, the agent was so tough in front of the eight major film production companies that even the innovative artist agency would have to take a good look. But today Rick could almost say that he directly wiped out the face of the representatives of the 20th Century Fox and even issued an order to expel customers on the spot. Such a tough style is really rare.

"If it weren't for the absolute male lead who took the lead, Rick would never agree to accept it." Joseph finally concluded.

"You mean the lone hero in 'Terminator 2', the kind that depends on one person to save the whole world?" Hugo teased with a smile.

But Joseph did not deny it and nodded, "This is a commercial movie. In order to highlight your status and value, it is necessary and there is no room for negotiation. Rick said that if it were not the case, he would rather you continue to take on the movie as you wish than reduce your value to play one of the three male protagonists."

Hugo knew what Joseph meant, and he knew Rick's intention.

The situation like "Independence Day" is different from "Seven Deadly Sins" and "Schindler's List". Although Hugo played supporting roles in the two subsequent works, the situation is completely different.

"Seven Deadly Sins" and "Schindler's List" are not really commercial movies, but more of them are plot movies full of profound connotations. Although Hugo plays a supporting role, he is an important supporting role and is a crucial work for advancing the story.

The importance of a character is never judged by the length of time, but by the importance of the character to the script. "The Silence of the Lambs" and "The Seven Deadly Sins" are two best examples.

In commercial movies, although people have been complaining about the individual heroism in the United States, and almost every commercial movie relies on the strength of a person to turn the tide, including the "speed of life and death" starring Hugo, this not only reflects personal heroism, but also exerts the actor's personal appeal to the extreme, and satisfies the audience's deep yearning and fantasy for heroes. Personal heroism is very necessary for commercial movies, especially simple and crude popcorn commercial movies.

With Hugo's current influence and appeal, if he starred in a commercial movie, he was not the absolute core male lead, it would be unreasonable. Not only would it be unacceptable to Rick, but it was also true for the audience. Everyone entered the cinema with Hugo, the male lead, but only saw the other two male leads showing great power, which is undoubtedly very ridiculous.

In fact, this is not Rick's idea alone, but the industry rules. At its peak, Tom Cruise, Brad Pitt, Tom Hanks, Arnold Schwarzenegger, and Harrison Ford starred in his works, in addition to friendly guest appearances, the works he starred in are undoubtedly not the absolute male protagonists in terms of the weight or importance of the role.

At the peak of Tom Cruise, his agent even announced to the public that "not taking on the male lead" is not a joke, but the fact is that, except for the Wizards Paul Thomas Anderson invited Tom to play a supporting role in "Magnolia", Tom never played a supporting role in the 20 years of his acting career from 1986 to 2006.

Hugo's current situation is even more special. Rick is determined to take on a commercial film for Hugo, which is truly investing in and producing commercial films, and truly matches the current value and popularity of Hugo. This is an important milestone for Hugo's career in the next ten years. This is also an important reason why Rick is so cautious.

The 20th Century Fox's cautiousness in the past six months made Rick have high expectations for them, but in turn, it was a result, "One of the three male protagonists?" This is absolutely unacceptable.

In fact, Hugo personally, he didn't mind it. After all, just like Joseph said, his perspective is different from Rick. The script of "Independence Day" is not outstanding enough, and the characters are masked. He is mainly interested in this script because he has unforgettable memories of this work. This is indeed a popcorn commercial blockbuster that deserves to be remembered, so Hugo does not have much requirements for the script and the role.

But as Rick said, either you can just play a small role and play it in a friendly manner; or you can play the protagonist with a heavier weight and take on the burden. Otherwise, commercial movies like "Independence Day" do not have much value for performances to Hugo.

"I began to miss 'Mission Impossible'." Hugo's words made Joseph stunned. Seeing Joseph's stiff expression, Hugo laughed.

Joseph sighed lightly and sighed, "If it were now, Paramount would definitely choose yours."

Hugo shook his head, "That may not be underestimated to Tom's appeal." In Hollywood's long history of development, Tom Cruise's box office appeal is unparalleled. He has always been the most attractive member to the audience for twenty years. In the second decade of the 21st century, although people have always praised the box office appeal of Johnny Depp, Robert Donnie Jr., Jennifer Lawrence and others, compared with Tom, it is not the same level as that of Tom.

In the thirty years of movie history that Hugo is most familiar with, Tom Cruise is the well-deserved number one person at the box office. Until 2014, no one could shake it.

"Then give up this...well, 'Apocalypse'?" It almost became "Independence Day". Fortunately, it was changed in time. If I really missed it, Hugo would not have much regret. He handed Rick the scripts "British Patient" and "Independence Day" to Rick last time, but to be honest, neither of the works really made Hugo feel like it was.

Although Hugo is somewhat expecting "Independence Day", he is not an actor, but an audience. He is looking forward to the shooting process of this visual effect blockbuster and the process of collating a magnificent commercial blockbuster with the behind-the-scenes production staff. This is more like the mentality of fans. He has always been curious about how the so-called "green screen acting" was filmed, which is also one of the fun of shooting commercial movies he said to Leonardo before.

But Joseph paused at Hugo, and showed a proud smile, "Do you think Twentieth Century Fox is so easy to give up? Or do you think Rick will give up so easily? And you also underestimate your influence on Hollywood now."

Hugo raised his hands, "Although everyone says I am now at the top of the Hollywood pyramid, personally, I don't feel it very real." Hugo's helpless expression and his current big face were really funny, which made Joseph laugh directly.

"Kevin said they will change the script as soon as possible and then discuss it with us again." Joseph continued with a smile, "Rick and I think this is one of their strategies. We show their sincerity. They are not only willing to cooperate fully in revising the script, but also put on a low stance in front of Rick. The real purpose is cooperation. Rick speculates that they have already revised the script a long time ago. After all, anyone knows that you are absolutely impossible to accept the script they handed over now."

Sure enough, the direct game of large companies is not that simple.
