Chapter 1819 1819 Spark of Creation

When leaving Sunset Square, Hugo was a little confused.

The last time we met, Ernst accused Hugo of not writing scripts for a long time. After that, Hugo also had some inspiration, but he did not persist. From today's perspective, Ernst was actually asking for help from Hugo, but he ignored it. This reminded Hugo of the situation when he wrote the script "Before Sunrise".

It can be said that under Ernst's guidance, Hugo began to create the script step by step, showing Hugo a new world. Not only did Hugo create the script, but it also gave Hugo a new understanding of the storyline and character construction of the script. Later, Hugo was able to make breakthroughs in acting, and the overall view and sense of overall situation were given necessary help.

But as Ernst said, Hugo was lazy, and his creative inspiration was wiped out bit by bit in the storm of the Vanity Fair.

Later, there was the album "Storm" and the world tour, and then the performance of "Los Angeles City Secret", and he was returning to the track bit by bit, but the screenwriter's work was still not awakened in the dark corner. Is Hugo guilty about Ernst? Obviously not, it is more of an empathy.

In fact, Ernst, Katherine Hepburn, Paul Newman and other superstars are exactly the same. They have experienced the peak of their careers and endured the trough of their careers. At the end of their artistic life and away from the spotlight, they embarked on different paths. Katherine returned to Broadway, and Paul continued his acting career on the big screen, while Ernst was quietly waiting next to Hollywood in Sunset Square.

Because Ernst is different from Catherine and Paul, he has never really stood at the peak of his life's screenwriter career, just like... it's like his career that has been glorious all his life, but has not been officially recognized. That kind of loneliness and silence is something that others cannot understand.

In Ernst, Hugo saw that his shadow was not the same development trajectory, but the ups and downs and confusion in the Hollywood Vanity Fair.

Therefore, Hugo planned to create this script. He did not create this script for Ernst, but got inspiration from Ernst to create such a script for himself. Hugo hopes that the male protagonist can tailor it for himself and outline a real story.

For a period of time, Hugo focused on shooting "Los Angeles City Secret" during the day, and when he returned home at night, he would start to create scripts. This time, Hugo changed his creative method. He first began to create two characters, one man and one woman. The male protagonist is naturally a weird person based on Ernst, while the female protagonist is set as an understanding publisher editor.

But after creating thirteen acts, Hugo felt that the story was unconvincing. Not only was it a cliché like a transformed version of "Fengyue Pretty Beauty", but the core idea was completely messy, and the heroine had no charm at all, just like a vase.

For this reason, Hugo re-set the heroine. He thought about the type of friends who became lovers like "When Harry Meets Sally", and also thought about the type of letters that convey love in "Seattle Night Without Sleeping"... But later he found that these are routines of love stories. He really wanted to write a story about love, not because love can change people, but because the sincere emotions can bring people closer little by little, not necessarily love, perhaps friendship or family affection.

After changing six versions of the heroine, Hugo felt that he was in a dead end. The script had a vivid and vivid male lead, but there was no good entry point at all. Fortunately, Hugo now has enough control to distinguish reality from performance, and his understanding and control of the role of Ed is absolutely convincing, so it did not affect the crew's shooting work. But even so, Charlize still noticed Hugo's frustration.

Facing Hugo's defeat, Charlize seemed gloating. "Mr. Lancaster, who has a rare talent, will also be in trouble. This scene is not common." Hugo can't help but cannot refute it. After understanding Hugo's predicament, Charlize put forward a novel point of view, "I don't understand why you are always limited to two protagonists, one man and one woman. In fact, you can give the story more possibilities."

Hugo originally wanted to refute it because most movies that explore the soul focus on the male and female protagonists, but then he understood what Charlize meant, and the focus was on the male and female protagonists, but not necessarily only the male and female protagonists. The simplest example is the "Seven Deadly Sins". In fact, strictly speaking, the "Seven Deadly Sins" should be the inheritance relationship between the three male protagonists and the two detectives. The opposing relationship is maintained by a criminal, which is strange but mysterious triangular relationship.

The addition of any character can have many meanings. The most common thing is to break the fixed pattern between two characters, add more unknowns to an uncertain relationship, and make the story exciting, but also increase the interaction and space between characters, giving the screenwriter more room for in-depth discussion. This is also the reason why one-man show is difficult to write, because there is only one protagonist, and there is too little room for play.

So, if a character is added, how should he join? What is his or her setting, what is the relationship between the character and the male protagonist and the heroine, what role does it play between them, or what role it plays for the story.

So, such an interesting scene appeared on the set of "Los Angeles City Secret". During the break, Hugo and Charlize were arguing regardless of the occasion or the location.

At the elevator door, Hugo rolled his eyes and complained, "For God's sake, join a killer? This is a sign of your poor imagination. Please, at least give me a spy to be more decent." Charlize next to him was not showing any weakness, "Haha, then adding a psychiatrist is very innovative? Hey! The male protagonist is a psychiatrist of some degree. They can be known to him because of mental illness or a psychiatrist! Do you think you are shooting "Flying Over the Crazy Asylum"? What a genius!"

In the gap between drinking water in the dressing room, Charlize spread his hands and complained speechlessly, "Imagination, give me some bold imagination, homosexuality, love? This is your best idea? Why don't you write about a black homosexual, or an Asian transgender person? This is called boldness!" Hugo directly gave a middle finger, "I'm writing about quirks, not race, racial revolution, if I want to write, I will write about artificial intelligence enslave humans." The makeup artists next to him were frightened.

During the break in the game, Hugo ran to Charlize excitedly and said with a dance, "How do you think it's like to join a pet? For example, a puppy?" Charlize looked at Hugo speechlessly, and could see his attitude without saying anything. Hugo widened his eyes, "I think it's a good idea to make the puppy know as a bond. So, you have given up on humans and chose a puppy? Mr. Lancaster, you really refreshed my understanding of the script. Wonderful!"

Hugo and Russell, Charlize suddenly widened his eyes when he talked about the lines, "How do you think about writing a neighbor? Live next to the crazy male protagonist? Then there was a contact and conflict because of the neighbor's pet dog?" Hugo curled his lips and spoke sarcastically while thinking about it, "So, in addition to the puppy, there is another neighbor?" Charlize directly raised his right hand and raised his middle finger at Hugo. Russell, who was standing next to the line, opened his eyes as if he saw two monsters, stood next to him with an innocent look on his face and frozen into a statue.

...

Similar quarrels happen almost every day, although most of the time, the conception of Hugo and Charlize is not feasible, because writing a script does not mean writing a few characters, but it ends when pieced together; at the same time, it is not a simple story that links several characters without personality together, even if it is a script. A truly excellent script, role and story complement each other, while personality and thought promote each other. Even if there is no need to deliberately promote and explain, the core idea can be revealed from the character setting and word selection.

Unlike "before sunrise" who brings out all the questions and directly discusses them on the table, Hugo hopes that the script is full of wisdom, and different audiences can see different ideas from the story, just like a Rubik's Cube.

However, interestingly, Charlize gave Hugo a lot of inspiration during the writing process of "Before Sunrise", and this time was no exception. Although most of Charlize's conception was not feasible, and many of Hugo's ideas were shot and rejected by Charlize, during the discussion, Hugo gained a lot of inspiration and his ideas became clearer bit by bit.

Hugo thinks it is a good choice to join a character. This character can be the neighbor next door to the protagonist. He is also an art creator Hugo is still considering whether he is a painter or a photographer. What is the special meaning of this profession? Obviously, it is not done by just choosing one casually. Hugo also hopes to establish a complete background for this story and combine it with the story.

The reason why he chose an art creator is because this neighbor also has his own quirks, his paranoia about art is often elusive, and he is also a group that was completely marginalized by society in the early 1990s, so he is also an eliminator of society. Even though his works are talented, only a few people can appreciate them. Unlike the male protagonist, the neighbor often holds parties, and he has been surrounded by the crowd for a long time, but this noisy cannot make him feel self-identified. The excitement makes his life seem even more lonely. The emptiness after the party is almost suffocating him.

What's worse is that because of his identity, sexuality and love, his parents were not willing to identify with him at all, and even regarded him as a snake and scorpion, avoiding him, fearing that his identity would subvert their normal lives. This made him live in this cold world like the protagonist, isolated and helpless.

This is the similarity between the two people, completely different, but the essence is extremely close. Perhaps it is a good idea to have a pet dog become the bond between these two neighbors in the Antarctic and Arctic.
