Chapter 2015 2015 Deep Dive into Metaphors

As a profound work, although "Trumen's World" is a comedy movie, its connotation is a rare and wonderful masterpiece in the past decade. This special issue produced by the "Chicago Tribune" actually led to a deeper discussion, which was something that people did not expect.

As we all know, "Trumen's World" actually has three traps. The first layer is the movie itself. The reality show starring Truman Burbank has attracted countless audiences around the world to watch; the second layer is the audience sitting in the cinema, and everyone has countless recollections and thoughts about the story, including freedom to death, entertainment to death, change and fear; the third layer is the hidden worries hidden behind the story: Are we also "Trumen", and the trajectory of our lives is also under the control of an unknown "God"; are we also like the poor Truman, who thinks that we have control of fate, but he is confused and does not know that we are just another clown who jokes about entertainment after dinner.

So far, the discussion about these three traps has been sensational, which makes everyone amazed at the "Trumen's World" and is endlessly talking about this movie. The high enthusiasm reminds people of the years after the emergence of "Star Wars".

However, now some people say that in fact, there is a fourth layer of trap in the "Trumen's world". This trap is not the so-called alien civilization or the so-called God's perspective, but the internal contradiction between "free will" and "spiritual home".

In the movie, the ubiquitous cameras truly show Truman's world, representing gaze, peeping and control. A huge, invisible external force has completely placed the personal ** under surveillance. Human existence does not serve the human beings themselves, but has become the object of external force control.

In real life, this can actually be understood as the control and norms of social institutions. For example, schools, military, companies, monitoring, norms, rules, etc. are everywhere. People need to use ID cards, credit cards, monitors and other methods to place the information of ordinary residents under the control system. This discipline is invisibly found in all the details of society. People use rigorous moral norms to constrain their thoughts through publicity, education, training and other methods. Of course, the premise of freedom is to abide by laws and regulations, which is a social norm.

However, Truman’s tragedy is not that he cannot leave Paradise Island, but that under the guidance of the program team, he has bound himself, lost the urge to go out, and lost the courage to change. Just like the intriguing words in the movie, "Because people accept reality", the movie borrows Meryl's words to express this kind of self-restraint, "We want to provide housing, we want to provide cars, how can we leave just by saying that?" These shackles are given to us by society, but we have also given ourselves the cowardice and compromise of yearning for freedom. This spiritual shackle is the most terrifying thing.

In fact, Paradise Island in the movie can be seen as a satire of the conservative values advocated by the American conservative parties. This value emphasizes traditional values, family values, and firmly opposes abortion, homosexuality, and multiculturalism. Since Reagan took office, this idea has become the mainstream ideology in the United States.

The elegant housewife in the villa is always hairless, always patiently making delicious dinners, always waiting for her husband and children to return; the kind neighbors see her husband returning home with briefcases, always greeting him enthusiastically, and always say irrelevant news friendly and gentle; even lawn mowers, kitchen utensils, coffee, and cars have been stipulated, and it seems that the middle class is stipulated that they should use these brands, "The world of Truman is a lifestyle, a model life, and a truly happy life."

This itself is one of the purpose of the program team creating the reality show "Trumen's World", which is to promote a model life to the audience.

However, as revealed in the movie, this kind of life is actually just a model drama. Behind the glamorous house and the stylized greetings and politeness is hopeless hypocrisy, depravity and despair. This model drama also continues the conservative party's pursuit of religious belief, and the main characters alludes to the characters in the Bible.

Christopher is like "Jesus Christ", the Island of Paradise is the Garden of Eden, Meryl, Malone and other actors are the incarnations of devout believers, and Truman is the only alien in the entire society.

Truman roared at the sky in the storm, "If you want to stop me, you must kill me." This passionate scene reminds people of the Ramses Pharaoh in "Exodus" who dared to challenge God's authority; the plot of Sylvia revealing the truth to Truman on the beach is completely corresponding to the story of the snake and Eve in the Garden of Eden. The snake told Adam, "If you eat the fruits of the tree of good and evil, you will distinguish good and evil like gods." God lied to people, saying that if you eat it, you will die because God hopes that Truman will stay on the island of heaven forever.

In the biblical story, Adam and Eve, who had stolen the consequences of good and evil, were cursed by God. The pursuit of truth and self-improvement is sin. The rules of good and evil in the Garden of Eden are different from those in the mortal world. Lies are virtues, and pursuing truth is sin. Because God hopes that people will never understand good and evil, right and wrong, and shame one of the basic teachings of Christianity: people must rely entirely on God, not on their own abilities, and believe in God in everything they do, and God will guide them on the way.

It is understandable for humans who are still in a state of confusion, but it is very ridiculous for humans who have experienced the Enlightenment. This is the beginning of the conflict between the "spiritual home" and "free will".

As we all know, with the development of science and technology and society, the meaning of religion has become much weaker than its peak in the Middle Ages. However, religion, as a culture, has long penetrated into the bone marrow of national cultures in various countries due to historical reasons, and has become one of the cornerstones of modern civilization. The influence of the "Bible" story has been subtly deposited in people's subconscious minds, unconsciously affecting people's thinking and regulating people's behavior; at the same time, with the continuous expansion of desire, rapid changes in society, and the collapse of the traditional value system, more and more people realize that they need a spiritual sustenance and a spiritual home, so more and more people convert to religion again, and their faith begins to flourish again.

In the movie "Trumen's World", the conservative parties have created such an ideal paradise island, peaceful and joyful, sunny, happiness, peace and tranquility, which made Meryl, Malone and others immersed in such a life, gradually lost themselves, just like Trumen, gradually began to lose their free will, born in distress and died in peace. This black fairy tale expresses strong concerns about this situation: people once again explore religion and pursue faith, what is the meaning of the soul?

Human beings pursue truth, but instead are judged by God; human beings pursue freedom, but are destroyed by God. There are countless examples in history. Truman is just the simplest example in contemporary society. He is much happier than Giordano Bruno who was burned to death.

The movie presents this worry in a black fairy tale way, pushing such a story to the extreme, fully displaying terrible consequences, and then negating it. This is an important addition to the profound connotation of "Trumen's world".

Another positive aspect of "Trumen's World" is Trumen's final result. He not only regained his freedom and re-entered his own life; but also overturned the meaning of the existence of the entire Paradise Island, thus allowing everyone else in the program team to get rid of the manipulated fate from then on.

It is true that, as Christopher said, "The outside world is as false as the world I gave you, with the same lies and the same fraud, but in my world, you don't have to be afraid of anything." But the question is, choose false beauty or real dirty?

On the surface, this is a Hamlet-like question: survival or death? But in fact, this is a false proposition: because in the story of the movie, even if Truman chooses to stay, he will not be able to stay after learning the truth. The only truth of this variety show has become false, so the show will become a joke.

Therefore, the "Trumen's world" is destined to collapse. The control of a spider web cannot confine a soul that yearns for freedom. Just as Trumen said: Even if five thousand cameras are set up, one camera cannot be installed in his mind; so, in fact, the movie does not give any other choice, only the only answer: go out.

Truman broke the shackles of Paradise Island and successfully walked out of the Garden of Eden. In the "Bible" story, the next thing can be understood: human beings were born. Of course, after Truman left Paradise Island, he had to face a wild world. For Truman, his choice had a strong metaphor, and his potential core was that the possibility of "a trivial but foresighted individual liberating the free will of all mankind" exists.

Through a dark fairy tale that is almost joking and full of ridicule, "Trumen's World" directly pushes God to the judgment stage. This is a great ode to the free will of mankind. In the confrontation between free consciousness and spiritual home, human nature of yearning for freedom has finally come to a last laugh.

Although "Trumen's World" is ultimately a comedy movie with an entertainment temperament, this movie still succeeds in transcending the entertainment effect of popular movies and entering a more serious creative field, becoming a perfect carrier of a warning fable. With a smile on his face, the ideological storm in people's minds is the most powerful force.
