Chapter 395 395 Performance Intention

Hugo's first reaction when he saw the script "Shawshank's Redemption" was: 1994 is coming, and his blood is boiling! The next second reaction was: Why did this script look for him?

There are two main characters in the story of "Shawshank Redemption", namely one black and one white. The male protagonist Andy is played by Tim Robbins (Ti Thi thy.robbns), while the male supporting actor Reed is taken on the heavy burden by veteran actor Morgan Freeman (Ti Thi Rgan.freeman). Of course, due to the importance of Reed's character to the story, many people call it a double-protagonist movie.

Tim can actually be regarded as a Tom Hanks type actor. He looks sincere, has diligent and solid acting skills, and has no scandals or negative news in his private life. His sibling relationship with Susan Sarandon is a legendary story in Hollywood. This type of actor is like Superman to the United States. Americans need such a just and upright actor to take the lead. Unfortunately, Tim met Tom Hanks, and Hanks became the most famous hero in the United States. He has become the spokesperson for Hollywood for twenty years, and Tim's acting career has always been a bit short of time.

The character of Rheindy in "Shawshank Redemption" is also very consistent with Tim's image, honest, gentle, forbearing, elegant and restrained, so Tim is indeed very consistent in image. Looking back at Hugo himself, since "Schindler's list" is still in post-production and has not met the public, so Hugo's current screen image is actually the same, and it has a natural fit with Andy.

Hugo's temperament is sunny and handsome, and elegant. No wonder Frank Delabont took the initiative to designate Hugo, hoping that he would play this role.

In fact, in the preparations for the "Shawshank Redemption", although Columbia Pictures paid attention to this plan, it did not pay too much attention to it. Although Stephen King's adaptation rate of works was very high, no great success except the "Shirt", and the success of the "Shirt" was attributed to the great Stanley Kubrick. Obviously, Frank Derabont was not Stanley.

Therefore, Columbia Pictures only gave a budget of 25 million US dollars, and the premise is that Morgan Freeman, the first choice of the role of Reed, is a large part of the budget for Morgan. Then, Frank is stretched to choose the male lead, which is also the fundamental reason why Tim was able to stand out in the end. Currently, Tim can only be regarded as an actor who transitions from the second to the first line in Hollywood. The "super big player" he starred last year won him a series of nominations for actors, proving his strength.

However, compared to Tim, Hugo's advantage is that he is younger, has equally excellent acting skills, but his box office is more appealing, but his pay has just increased and is not too high. It is within the budget control. It is very reasonable for Frank to take the lead in taking the lead in Hugo.

The thoughts in his mind suddenly came to his mind, and Hugo began to think: Do you want to star in this script?

Of course, I have to be starred in the best work in film history! This is Hugo's first idea, just like the thought that popped up in his mind when he heard the "Schindler's list". This is a kind of movie fans' psychology. It makes himself a part of these classic works. It is a surging emotion. Many industry practitioners entered the movie because of this emotion. Later, the famous genius director Quentin Tarantino (quentin.tarantino). He relied on his crazy love for movies and grew from a video rental store clerk to a world-renowned top director. With this enthusiasm for worshiping classic works.

But soon, Hugo calmed down. After experiencing the "Schindler's List", and after the previous "icing trap" and "desperate fate", Hugo knew very clearly that in the long history of the movie, there are countless excellent works, and he could not appear in every classic work. In Hollywood, actors still have to rely on fate to act in their works. They cannot lose their sense of proportion because "Shawshank's Redemption" is an excellent work. It should still be measured from an objective perspective. Otherwise, he will never be able to mature in the position of an actor.

First of all, Hugo knew that he was still not ready to act in the work again, and the fatigue after "Schindler's list" was still not relieved. His whole mind was still immersed in the role of Amon Goss. Otherwise, he would not have opened it after receiving the script, because he was still not ready to act in a new work in the depths of his heart. If he barely played "Shawshank Redemption", perhaps he would not only not be able to compete in this role, but also ruined this classic work.

Furthermore, when an actor chooses a work, he should not only focus on the script itself, but also focus on the role. Whether he can be competent in the role, whether the role can bring new challenges, and how much resonance there is between himself and the role, this is the core factor for the actor to choose a script.

So, what about the character Andy?

In fact, in the story of "Shawshank's Redemption", what really creates the classic is Andy's desire for freedom and indelible hope. However, in the character Andy itself, both the depth and thickness of the character and the space left by the director for the character to play are very limited. Of course, it is not that the character Andy does not test his acting skills, but in fact, the test of his acting skills is very difficult for this character to be.

Andy's restrained, elegant and upright look out of place in the entire prison. From the moment he entered the prison, his psychological changes were very subtle. He went from a banker to a murderer, fell from heaven to hell, and the entire prison greeted him in the dark hell. In this process, Andy's heart was suffering; then, Andy sought an opportunity and began to gradually realize his self-worth in the prison and use the last bit of light of his dark life; but when Andy learned that the person who killed his wife and her lover was not himself, but someone else, Andy's inner struggle and pain were the greatest torture.

Andy's psychological changes are very delicate. He did not perform in a flash. Many times, just subtle changes in his eyes, mouth corners, hand movements, and walking postures. This entanglement and contradiction deeply buried in his heart makes the actor full of countless difficulties and challenges when trying to make the character Andy three-dimensional. The performance space left by director Frank for the actor is very limited, which increases the difficulty several times.

Relatively speaking, the role of Reed is equally delicate, but the inner changes in the role are relatively not that complicated. Frank left more room for the actors, so behind the control of one rise and one fall, the role of Reed is easier to see the actors' performance skills.

This is true in history. Morgan played Reed, winning the Oscar for Best Actor nomination for Best Actor rather than Best Supporting Actor, which is the peak of the show; while Tim played Andy, but failed to win the Oscar nomination.

In fact, Tim's performance was very outstanding. He had a very accurate grasp of Andy's changes in his mind, and also showed his delicate and restrained acting skills. It was the finishing touch for the movie. More importantly, Tim did not lose any disadvantage in the rivalry with Morgan, which made the "Shawshank Redemption".

Therefore, Tim did not win the Oscar nomination and was also hailed as a major unsolved case for the Oscar. This unsolved case was not until ten years later, in 2004, when Tim was compensated for the movie "Mystic River" and won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor Little Golden Man.

For Hugo, the character Andy still has challenges. He is somewhat similar to the character "Smelling the Scent and Knowing the Woman", but the inner changes are more intense and complex, and the gap is even more distinct. Moreover, Andy is the male lead in the movie, so the performance space is naturally broader. However, compared with "Yihai Xiongfeng" or "Schindler's List", the character Andy's explosive power is still lacking. Moreover, Hugo only played a gentle and jade-like role like "Seattle Night Not Sleeping". Although Andy is darker and more complicated, her strength is still lacking.

However, Hugo believes that if you give the character Andy more space, it may not be too long. It may be just a few details of the shots. It only takes one or two minutes to outline the character Andy more vividly and specifically, leaving the actors with space for performance, and at the same time, it also makes Andy more three-dimensional, and most importantly, it makes the whole story smoother.

Therefore, Hugo was a little moved by the role of Andy, but was not too active. Hugo felt that he should sit down with director Frank and have a face-to-face conversation, and the two sides exchanged their opinions before making a decision.

After thinking, Hugo made a decision, which also made Hugo breathe a sigh of relief. He has indeed grown a lot in a year. If it were half a year ago, before the Golden Globes incident, Hugo would definitely not wait to take on the script. After all, this was an invitation from Frank to Hugo. A classic work like "Shawshank's Redemption" is naturally not to be missed; but now, he can look at these opportunities more maturely and calmly, which also marks that he is constantly improving on the road to becoming a professional actor.

Of course, if we can appear in the position of the male lead of "Shawshank Redemption", this will inevitably be another huge progress for Hugo, and Hugo also has a vague expectation for this.

So, Hugo called Joseph and expressed his wishes.

"You mean you want to have an interview with Frank." Joseph confirmed again.

"Yes, I think it's better to have a face-to-face exchange." Hugo emphasized, "I will move towards the East Coast next time. There is no problem with the big cities along the way. You can confirm with him and see if Chicago or New York, or other places. Let's meet directly and discuss in detail."
