Chapter 172 Militia and regular army!

The high mobilization rate of the Boers is a miracle in the history of war. In the Boer War, almost all young and middle-aged people from the two Boer republics joined the army, and the total population of 220,000 was actually 88,000. This ratio does not have this record even if the Mongolian cavalry scattered the entire Eurasian continent?

However, the powerful forces used in a state of war do not mean that these personnel are qualified soldiers. Even if the militia who picks up guns to fight, they are militias. Even if they fight on a large scale, they will be militias. Most of the victory of the Boer in the Boer War was due to the British underestimation of the enemy and small-scale wars. It is still impossible to fight head-on. What Kalipt has to do is transform these militias into real soldiers!

"Discipline, the most important thing is discipline. Your troops can only be called militias rather than army! A militia without discipline, lacking training and command cannot defeat an army. If your troops go to war with the British, they will have the opportunity to use the British underestimation of the enemy at the beginning to gain some results, but large-scale wars are definitely not possible." Kariput said earnestly after seeing the so-called "large-scale" military exercises of the Boers.

"Our personnel are limited, and our standing forces are only 2 regiments at most, and almost all the troops are highly regional and familial." Kruger admitted the accusations of the German consultant very calmly. There is no way to not admit it! After seeing the German army, the Boers' armed forces were already very proud of their face.

The first thing Kariput did was to disrupt the Boers from all over the world to reorganize the Boers, weaken the influence of the region and family. The first lesson he wanted to teach the Boers was to obey! Obey the commander's orders instead of obeying the commander's orders or the farmer's orders! When the war broke out in the country, they needed to follow the commander's orders to fight instead of going home to protect their farm. (The Boers did this in history. Therefore, although the Boers were fierce, their discipline was indeed very poor.)

The second problem is to abandon the guerrilla style. Kariput, who was born in the regular army, found that there was a very special phenomenon in the Boer army, that is, his preference for light weapons and mobility. The Boer people are very rich. Whether it is the government or individual, they can accumulate a lot of wealth by relying on gold and diamonds. Therefore, to outsiders, the expensive semi-automatic rifles and heavy machine guns are very expensive in the Boer army, especially the semi-automatic rifles. In just a few years, the Boer people purchased 15,000! The proportion of this unit with semi-automatic rifles is no less than the Blue Legion that swept the Japanese army in the northeast!

Machine guns and various rapid-fire cannons are also the favorites of the Boer army. Whether it is the German version of the Wicks machine gun, the 57mm rapid-fire cannon and 37mm machine cannon, the Boer people are equipped with a lot of them. These cannons are very light, and two horses can pull away a cannon truck and ammunition cart. The 75mm rapid-fire cannons in the first-class unit of the division were unpopular because this cannon and cannon truck are too heavy and not suitable for maneuvering.

Some people may say that this tendency is very good! Why not support it? The reason is very simple. There is no future in guerrilla warfare alone! It is impossible to break through important British strongholds and open up external transportation lines, so the Boers' resistance will not last, let alone victory.

The biggest problem after choosing a large number of light equipment is that the firepower is too weak. You can set up a Boer ambush and use flexible machine guns to cooperate with elite infantry to launch short assaults. In battalion-level confrontation, the Boer can also use his skillful personal qualities and fortifications to block the opponent's attacks. However, once the size of the troops is increased to the division level, or if the Boer attacks, the problem will come immediately!

Simple fortifications can easily resolve the attacks of 57mm cannons and machine guns. Although the Boers are brave, they lack scientific theoretical guidance. They do not know how to deal with obstacles, how to deal with mine formations, and how to kill the enemies behind the bunkers. The Germans found that in the Boers army, 100 defenders could easily defeat 5 times the attackers! The Boers' tough battle itself was very rough, and once they encountered setbacks, they often chose to avoid or retreat. And doing so has no future!

Why does the weak side like to fight guerrilla warfare? Because it is easy, it does not require too much supply, equipment and personnel. As long as you have a good mass base, you can fight for success. At least on the surface, it seems like this. In fact, although the Boer War lasted for 31 months, the Boer people actually had only four months in the first phase. When the British really became serious and decided to fight a good fight, the Boer army immediately withered......

During the seven months of the second phase, the British continued to attack, and the Boers continued to retreat... First lost Orange, and then Johannesburg. In the seven months, the Boers' large-scale resistance ultimately failed. The so-called Boers' War was actually just an anti-guerrilla war. Of course, to be objectively evaluated, the Boers fought well, and even captured a British lieutenant general, but in fact, the battle reached this level, it had entered garbage time, and failure was sooner or later.

Guerrilla warfare is not that it is not necessary, but that it cannot be used as the main body of the battle. After all, the Boers mobilized 80,000 troops, which is already a war of army-level. If you want to defeat the British army, only large-scale corps can be used. Otherwise, guerrilla warfare can only barely delay its decline.

Therefore, Kariput asked Kruger to establish a modern logistics and staff system. Establish the General Staff to command the army, and at the same time establish a complete logistics system to ensure smooth supply. He even used forced means to require the Boers to learn how to face the British fortifications and learn how to break through these iron turtles instead of using harassment and simple siege to avoid problems.

Under the supervision of German instructors, the Boers must learn how to break obstacles, how to overwhelm the opponent with excellent artillery tactics on the front battlefield instead of knocking out a small artillery position of the opponent by sneak attacks, and how to overcome the morale problem after the attack was frustrated. In short, Kariput tried his best to increase the resilience and discipline of the Boers. Teach them how to choose the opportunity to severely damage the opponent's vitality on the front battlefield, and how to pull out the key strongholds of the British, rather than just as fierce as the Cossack cavalry, but lacking durability, and can only be destroyed but not occupied.
